Summary: This is a first-person narrative, in which a young man is walking along a desert road in the American West, and a truck stops for him. The driver propositions the young man for sex, and the rider slugs him and gets out of the truck. Five minutes later the driver is back alongside with the offer of a job loading railroad ties, and the young man accepts. They pick up an old man on the road, and the driver drops them off at the job site. The work is hard and after five days the old man gets sick. The two men ask for their pay, and get eighteen dollars each. They go to a bar, where the old man drinks wine and passes out, while the young one goes upstairs with a prostitute. For five dollars she adds a bath to the deal. The young man leaves the old man in the bar, and hitchhikes out of town.
