Summary: Aunt Agatha rents a chalet on the beach for a summer vacation. Orville wants to go fishing for cod in the ocean, rather than do the usual seaside activities. A local man gives him a boat, named Martha, and soon Orville, Wilbur, and Bob set out to fish. Orville insists that the women stay home, as this is men's work, and Bobette is hopping mad. They catch a fish, a musical fish, who plays an old Icelandic fisherman's song on a flute. A fog comes up, and the Martha is rammed and destroyed by a large sailing ship called the Melanie. The Melanie is almost a ghost ship, with only a fisherman named Cornelius aboard. The last log entry is dated 1885. Cornelius tells about emigrating to Iceland, where they found a pleasant island next to a warm current. One day Cornelius went fishing and returned just in time to see the whole island sucked under by a whirlpool. Nothing was left but a little box with a flute in it. He searched for his family for a hundred years, and as long as he played the flute he didn't get any older. Then the flute fell overboard and Cornelius was in despair, until he herad it playing in the fog. That was when the Melanie rammed the Martha. Orville gives him the flute, and the friends decide to help Cornelius find his family. Professor Barnabas has invented an undersea boat, a bathyscaphe, which they load onto the deck of the Melanie, and off they go. One day, as they near the site of the missing island, Bob is practicing archery on the deck and shoots an arrow into Bobette's doll, Molly. The doll plunges overboard, and Bobette is hysterical. Wilbur dives overboard to recover the doll and gets into a fight with some giant squids in the process, but Molly is retrieved and repaired. They hit an ice floe and it punches a hole in the hull, but the Melanie floats again when they push the bathyscaphe overboard. Soon all the friends are exploring the sea bottom in the undersea vehicle. Aunt Agatha insists they stop so she can go out and do laundry, and while the clothes are on the clothesline drying she takes a stroll, and sees chickens, sheep, and a cow. Upon investigation, Cornelius's whole farm and family are found living in an air bubble at the bottom of the ocean. Rosalind, the daughter of Cornelius, explains to Bob that the little settlement is under siege by monster sea snails who want their land. The sea snails have imprisioned their former boss, King Neptune. Bobette is jealous of Rosalind, and they fight. As a result Rosalind gets hit by a sea urchin fired by a snail. Only King Neptune has the antidote to the sea urchin poison. Bobette sneaks out alone to get the antidote, and on the way is captured by the snails. She is imprisoned with Neptune and his family, who turn out to be friends from a previous adventure. Orville, Agatha and Bob arrive and rescue them, and overthrow the snails. They rush Neptune back the farm with the antidote, and Rosalind is saved. The farmers move back to the surface, and our friends resume their summer vacation.
