Mexican Deserts.
   "Starlight" (Rork ; 4) / Andreas ; J.-M. & R. Lofficier,
   translation. 47 p. in The Graveyard of Cathedrals ;
Starlight (New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1990). --
Translation of: Lumière d'Étoile. -- Summary: Rork arrives
at a little cliffside village in the Mexican desert, which
has been preparing for a year for an astronomical event
predicted by an ancient painting on the side of the cliff.
The effort is being coordinated by Deliah Darkthorne, or
Low Valley as she now prefers to be called. Low has aged 40
years in the year and a half since teleporting at the end
of the Passages album. She is the one who sent the note
summoning Rork. Low doesn't understand what the "event" is
going to be, only that a beam of light will come down from
the sky and that it will have transformational powers. Low
has placed experiments in the path of the beam, like a
mouse, a cactus, and an apple. The beam comes, and things
change, but the results aren't very comprehensible. Low
takes Rork to another room and shows him her daughter,
Sy-Ra, who is floating in the air stuck between worlds as
Rork was near the end of "Passages." Low wants Rork to take
Sy-Ra to an astrologer to get her fixed up, and Rork
agrees. Then Low eats the apple from the beam experiment,
and seems to gain a new sense of well-being and extended
perceptions. She tells Rork they'll meet again in nine
months, at his house. -- Call no.: PN6747.A542G713 1990

"La Mine d'Or de Dick Digger" / Morris. p. 7-30 (plates
   1-25) in Lucky Luke : Spécial 1 (Marcinelle-Charleroi,
Belgique : Dupuis, 1979). -- Summary: Lucky Luke rides
toward Nugget City with Dick Digger, the prospector. Dick
is in a celebratory mood because he has struck gold, and
he's on his way to register his claim and tell his wife and
son. Though Dick is cautious enough to have hidden the map
to his gold mine in a rum bottle, he can't help drawing
attention to himself by spending gold nuggets and shouting
about it in a saloon. That night he is robbed of his
nuggets and his rum, and gets amnesia from a bump on the
head. One of the robbers is apparently a Mexican, named
Mestizo, and the other is called Big Belly. Lucky Luke goes
looking for the robbers, and after several days he finds
them just as they discover the map in the bottle. Lucky
Luke gets it away from them, and then lets them steal back
an altered version. At this point Lucky Luke disappears,
falling over a waterfall. Jolly Jumper, his faithful and
unusually clever horse, thinks his master is dead and is
about to commit suicide when an Indian fisherman pulls Luke
out of his net. Lucky Luke returns the genuine map to the
Digger family, while the false map leads the robbers to a
perch on a cliff ledge where they're easily captured. When
Dick Digger sees Big Belly his memory returns, and the
family rides into the sunset in its covered wagon to
exploit the mine. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L8 1979

"Le Retour de Joe La-Gâchette" p. 6-22 in Sous le Ciel de
l'Ouest / textes et dessins de Morris, in Lucky Luke :
   Spécial 2 (Marcinelle-Charleroi, Belgique : Dupuis, 1980).
-- Summary: Near the town of Nugget Gulch, Lucky Luke meets
a bearded man who calls himself John the Philanthropist.
John says he's a peaceful man, and that the notches on his
revolver aren't his, because he just found it and doesn't
really use it well. When a cobra comes from behind a rock
and John draws and kills it in one swift motion, Lucky Luke
has to wonder about his story. In Nugget Gulch a horse race
is planned for the next day. Since John and Lucky Luke are
both low on money, they both decide to enter. John has seen
Jolly Jumper run, and knows he can't beat such a horse, but
he enters the race anywhow. Betting is heavy on the race,
and a series of colorful charcters are entered, including a
Mexican rider named "Pedro Nice Chink" riding a mule named
"Flower of the Orient," and a overweight man called "Texas
Slim." When Lucky Luke goes to get Jolly Jumper for the
race, he finds the horse missing. The race starts without
Lucky Luke. John the Philanthropist's horse is black, until
a rain shower washes the stain off and the stolen Jolly
Jumper is revealed. Lucky Luke whistles, and Jolly Jumper
dumps John into a rain barrel. Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper
win the race together, inspired by an electric shock after
a collision with a telegraph pole. John steals all the
money and runs for it on his own horse. Lucky Luke
telegraphs ahead to Rattlesnake Valley, and has "poison"
signs put on all the water holes in the desert. John is
soon crazy with thirst and easily caught. Lucky Luke has
him shaved and he turns out to be the wanted outlaw Joe
   La-Gâchette. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L804 1980
