A Child in Palestine : the Cartoons of Naji al-Ali /
introduction by Joe Sacco. -- London : Verso Books, 2009.
   -- 117 p. : ill. ; 20 cm. -- Summary (from SkyRiver): Naji
al-Ali grew up in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain
al-Hilweh in the south Lebanese city of Sidon, where his
gift for drawing was discovered by the Palestinian poet
Ghassan Kanafani in the late 1950s. Early the following
decade he left for Kuwait, embarking on a thirty-year
career that would see his cartoons published daily in
newspapers from Cairo to Beirut, London to Paris.
Independent and unaligned to any political party, Naji
al-Ali strove to speak to and for the ordinary Arab people.
The pointed satire of his stark, symbolic cartoons brought
him widespread renown. For the first time in book form, A
Child in Palestine presents the work of Naji al-Ali.
Through his most celebrated creation, the witness-child
Handala (Hanthala), al-Ali chronicles the Israeli
occupation, the corruption of the regimes in the region,
and the plight of the Palestinian people. -- Call no.:

Palestininan Political Cartoons.
-- Call no.:

argues that Palestinian and Arab political cartoons
participate in building the Palestinian nationalist project
in opposition to 'the Israeli occupation' through their
dissemination of patriotic feelings across deceptively
simple cultural symbols. My dissertation focuses on
cartoons published in two Palestinian newspapers and three
neighboring Arabic newspapers. These cartoons deal with the

Waltz with Bashir : a Lebanon war story / Ari Folman, David
   Polonsky. -- New York : Metropolitan Books, 2009. -- 117 p.
: col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- Summary (from SkyRiver): In Beirut
in September 1982, while Israeli soldiers secured the area,
a Christian militia entered the refugee camps of Sabra and
Shatila and massacred hundreds, if not thousands, of
Palestinians. Ari Folman was one of those Israeli soldiers,
but for more than twenty years he remembered nothing of
that night. Then came a friend's disturbing dream and with
it Folman's need to excavate the truth of the war in
Lebanon and answer the crucial question: What was he doing
during the hours of slaughter at Sabra and Shatila?
Stunningly original in form, Waltz with Bashir follows
Folman's journey deep into the darkness of Beirut. Drawing
on the stories of other soldiers and his own returning
fragments of memory, Folman painfully and candidly pieces
together the war and his place in it: the senselessness of
   the soldiers' orders; the fear that pervades every moment;
the casual bloodshed of civilians, culminating in the
massacres themselves. The result is a graphic novel that is
as damning as it is beautiful. An indictment of violence of
extraordinary power. -- Autobiographical genre. -- Call
