Sous le Ciel de l'Ouest

Sous le Ciel de l'Ouest / textes et dessins de Morris. 50 p. in Lucky Luke : Spécial 2 (Marcinelle-Charleroi, Belgique : Dupuis, 1980). -- Originally published in 1952. -- Contents: "Le Retour de Joe La-Gâchette" p. 6-22 ; "Jours de Round-Up" p. 23-33 ; "Le Grand Combat" p. 34-50. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L804 1980

"Le Retour de Joe La-Gâchette" p. 6-22 (plates 126-142). -- Summary: Near the town of Nugget Gulch, Lucky Luke meets a bearded man who calls himself John the Philanthropist. John says he's a peaceful man, and that the notches on his revolver aren't his, because he just found it and doesn't really use it well. When a cobra comes from behind a rock and John draws and kills it in one swift motion, Lucky Luke has to wonder about his story. In Nugget Gulch a horse race is planned for the next day. Since John and Lucky Luke are both low on money, they both decide to enter. John has seen Jolly Jumper run, and knows he can't beat such a horse, but he enters the race anywhow. Betting is heavy on the race, and a series of colorful characters are entered, including a Mexican rider named "Pedro Nice Chink" riding a mule named "Flower of the Orient," and an overweight man called "Texas Slim." When Lucky Luke goes to get Jolly Jumper for the race, he finds the horse missing. The race starts without Lucky Luke. John the Philanthropist's horse is black, until a rain shower washes the stain off and the stolen Jolly Jumper is revealed. Lucky Luke whistles, and Jolly Jumper dumps John into a rain barrel. Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper win the race together, inspired by an electric shock after a collision with a telegraph pole. John steals all the money and runs for it on his own horse. Lucky Luke telegraphs ahead to Rattlesnake Valley, and has "poison" signs put on all the water holes in the desert. John is soon crazy with thirst and easily caught. Lucky Luke has him shaved and he turns out to be the wanted outlaw Joe La-Gâchette.

"Jours de Round-Up" p. 23-33 -- Summary: It's Spring, and Lucky Luke comes to the Bar 3 ranch looking for a job. If he can break a wild bucking horse named "Polka," he gets the job. Lucky Luke borrows some suspenders, ties himself to the saddle, and the deed is soon done. The work of sorting and branding is accomplished, and a stampede is stopped by Lucky Luke and the Chinese cook. Back at the Bar 3, the owner is concerned to find he has 200 fewer head of cattle than last year. Lucky Luke discovers that two rustlers have been changing the "-3" brands to "4B," and brings them to justice.

"Le Grand Combat" p. 34-50 (plates 154-170, with 162-170 not numbered) -- Summary: Lucky Luke comes across a fellow who can't read, but who can knock out a charging bull with one punch, and who carries his horse when the horse needs a rest. The man's name is Percival Belden. Lucky Luke offers to be his manager and set up a boxing match with Killer Kelly, as Kelly is offering a $10,000 prize to anyone who can beat him. Percival agrees because he'd like to have enough money to marry Rosita, and so "Battling Belden the Butcher" is born. After a full set of gags about boxing and betting, the fight is about to begin when Rosita is kidnapped. A note says that if Belden wins the fight he'll never see Rosita again. Belden gets in the ring and starts letting himself be knocked down, while Lucky Luke rides out in search of Rosita, returning just in time to allow Belden to win the match with one punch.

Analyses the evolution of children's comics in Brazil,
which started by copying foreign characters in the magazine
O Tico-Tico. That magazine opened the way for the creation
and distribution of Mauricio de Sousa's characters, the
most popular among Brazilian children. Discusses the
several short-lived initiatives for creating children's
comic characters in the country during the 1990s. Comments
on the prospects for children's comics, focusing on the
difficulty of renewing products and characters. --

   Harvard University Press, 2015. -- 193 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.
   -- Includes bibliographical references (pages 171-189). --
Summary (from amazon via OCLC): "The primacy of words over
images has deep roots in Western culture. But what if the
two are inextricably linked, equal partners in
meaning-making? Written and drawn entirely as comics,
Unflattening is an experiment in visual thinking. Nick
Sousanis defies conventional forms of scholarly discourse
to offer readers both a stunning work of graphic art and a
serious inquiry into the ways humans construct knowledge.
'Unflattening' is an insurrection against the fixed
viewpoint. Weaving together diverse ways of seeing drawn
from science, philosophy, art, literature, and mythology,
it uses the collage-like capacity of comics to show that
perception is always an active process of incorporating and
reevaluating different vantage points. While its vibrant,
constantly morphing images occasionally serve as
illustrations of text, they more often connect in nonlinear
fashion to other visual references throughout the book.
They become allusions, allegories, and motifs, pitting
realism against abstraction and making us aware that more
meets the eye than is presented on the page." --
