-- Montréal, Quebec : Drawn and Quarterly, 2009. -- 855 p.

monumental memoir eleven years in the making, beginning
with his experiences as a child in Osaka, growing up as
part of a country burdened by the shadows of World War II.
Spanning fifteen years from August of 1945 to June of 1960,
Tatsumi's stand-in protagonist, Hiroshi, faces his father's
financial burdens and his parents' failing marriage, his
jealous brother's deteriorating health, and the innumerable
pitfalls that await him in the competitive manga market of
mid-twentieth-century Japan. He dreams of following in the
considerable footsteps of his idol, manga artist Osamu
Tezuka (Astro Boy, Apollo's Song, Ode to Kirihito,

Norton, 2012. -- 181 p. : ill. ; 23 cm. -- Includes

Summary (from SkyRiver): A cartoon Brooke Gladstone
conducts the reader through two millennia of history-from
the newspapers in Caesar's Rome to the penny press of the
American Revolution and the manipulations of contemporary
journalism. Gladstone's manifesto debunks the notion that
The Media is an external force, outside of our control,
since we've begun directly constructing, filtering, and
responding to what we watch and read. With fascinating
digressions, sobering anecdotes, and brave analytical wit,
The Influencing Machine equips us to be smart, savvy,
informed consumers and shapers of the media. It shows that
we have met the media and it is us. -- Call no.: PN4731.G53
