   "Le Livre Maudit" (Cap'tain Swing) p. 3-66 in Cap'tain
Swing, no. 114 (Sept. 2004). -- Summary: The Redcoat
soldiers arrest a man in the street who complains loudly of
his fate, but when he is taken to the commanding officer it
turns out he's an undercover agent, a traitor turning over
a list of patriots' names. Lord Marmaduke Langsburry, an
emisary direct from the King in London, witnesses the
transaction and asks to see the list. Lord Langsburry
pockets the list, then removes his beard to reveal that he
is indeed Captain Swing. In short order the traitor is
dead, and the fine carriage that brought "Langsburry" has
left at a gallop. The British soldiers take off after the
carriage, making it easy for Swing to sneak out of the
headquarters to hide with his old friend Professor
Griffith. The professor is puzzling over an old Rosicrucian
book he bought from an antiquarian book dealer in
Strasbourg. The reading isn't going well since it's
Greco-Latino-Hebraic in runic characters. By chance, a
soldier has seen Swing enter Griffith's house, so the
soldiers come and the two have to flee. Also there is a
sinister-looking bald man lurking in the house looking for
a chance to steal the book. The professor takes the book
with him, and they ride to Fort Ontario. Betty sets the
professor up with a place to study. The creepy bald man
returns to his home as well, on Black Skull Mountain, which
is not far from Fort Ontario. He thinks awhile, then sends
one of his superstitious Black servants, named Mumbulah, to
go to Fort Ontario on Lake Ontario and retrieve the book,
no matter whose life it costs. Meanwhile Griffith suddenly
figures out the book, and it makes him crazy. He babbles
nonsense and ancient-sounding words, and tries to kill
Mister Bluff's dog, Pouik, by hanging it by the neck with a
rope. Griffith's raving is so violent they have to tie him
up. Mumbulah arrives at the fort and tries to steal the
book, but gets locked up for his trouble. Hibou thinks
sorcery is involved. Taking the book, Swing rides out from
Lake Ontario for a few hours to a mountain cave full of
books, bottles and a smoking brazier. Swing asks the wise
man there to take a look at the book, and the wise man is
interested. He says to come back in a few days when he's
studied the book. Meanwhile, the strange bald man from
Black Skull Mountain shows up at Fort Ontario asking for
lodging. As he enters both Griffith and Mumbulah can be
heard raving from their respective lockups, and Mister
Bluff wonders if it might be the weather causing it. Hibou
says that Indians lose their spirit in captivity too, and
in sympathy lets Mumbulah out for some exercise. Mumbulah
sees his master and immediately commits suicide by jumping
from a tower. Then the bald man hypnotizes Betty from
behind without her having even seen him. He tells her to go
to town and buy a blue dress, and when she leaves the fort
on foot he kidnaps her. When Swing comes back from
delivering the book to his guru, a ransom note is found.
The Rosicrucian book must be brought to Black Skull
Mountain in exchange for Betty's life. Swing, Bluff and
Hibou retrace Swing's path to retrieve the book, and arrive
just as the wise man has deciphered it. He also starts
raving and has to be tied up. The bald man gets excited
when he mentally feels the book approaching, the book that
was "stolen from them at Tubingen." The man tries to
capture Swing rather than release Betty, and in the
struggle the book and the whole house are burned to ashes.
At that moment both of the raving scholars are released
from their spells miles apart. They get together at Fort
Ontario and agree that the destruction of the book was a
good thing. The one from the mountain, the one that Swing
calls "master," quotes Shakespeare: "There are more things
in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosopy."

illustrated by Mike Sekowsky and Richard Howell. --
SUMMARY: New York, 1940. Reporter Virginia Mueller gets an
assignment to do a story on the Blackhawks. Wu Cheng
(Chop-Chop), who has been living in his home village in
China, sends a distress call to the Blackhawks. A huge
mechanical dragon is being used by the Japanese to
devastate the village and intimidate the superstitious
villagers. Ginny Mueller and the Blackhawks meet in the
deserted village, and find Wu Cheng's diary. It describes
the building of the dragon, with American aid, and Wu
Cheng's efforts to stop it. Imprisoned by the Japanese, Wu
Cheng learns that the Japanese attacked his village
specifically to lure the Blackhawks there, as part of a
bargain with Germany. Ginny's presence as a witness was
also arranged by the Japanese. Wu Cheng gets free in time
to reveal the set-up and save the day. He re-joins the

inker ; Ben Oda, letterer ; D'Angelo, colorist ; Julius
Schwartz, editor. 16 p. in Superman, no. 405 (Mar. 1985).
-- Summary (by Mary Walker): Lana Lang reports on
mysterious sightings of a 'super-Batman'. Kent calls Bruce
Wayne and leaves a message with Alfred that he has a good
reason for what he is doing and will explain later. He
recalls how Lana had some Pan-pipes which her father found
with a statue of the god and how he experienced an
excruciating pain when she blew on them. Later he looks in
the mirror and finds he has grown horns. He realizes that
the syrinx, or pipes, may be the cure but he has to find
them because they have been stolen. To hide what has
happened he adopts Batman's cowl and cape in place of his
own cape. He uses the horns to capture the superstitious
thief before the spell dissipates taking the horns with
them. He tells Bruce about the episode and asks, "How do
you ever manage to scare anyone in that get-up of yours?"

Superwest Comics

Superwest Comics / Mattioli ; translated by Tom Leighton ; edited by Bernd Metz. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1987. -- 46 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- "No. 1." -- "Adults only."-- Superhero and funny animal genres. -- Call no.: PN6767.M37S813 1987

"Panic in the City" 8 p. -- Summary: The street has turned to quicksand. Cars, buses, bikes, cats, and people have sunk out of sight. The Marines arrive, and the populace cheers, but their helicopter lands on the street and disappears. The populace boos. Superwest takes his pill, transforms, and soon spots someone lurking behind a curtain. It's a dirty red pig, who has a machine to strike terror in dirty capitalist cities. Superwest beats him up, and pulls a lever back to "normal road." The populace cheers again. The street is solid, but Superwest steps onto the sidewalk and sinks out of sight. The panic continues.

"Porno Massacre" 4 p. -- Summary: Superwest hears a scream from high in a skyscraper, and finds a woman all cut up. She has left a note for Jim, saying she wants to quit her job and have a family. Jim rings the doorbell, and acts distraught to discover Gloria. Superwest spies a shelf of porno videos, and quickly figures out that Jim is the producer and Gloria was the star, and he killed her because she wanted to quit. Superwest takes the videos home.

"Cartoons Hold-Up" 4 p. -- Summary: Huey, Dewey and Louie ask a bank president to open his vault so they can get a good grade on their school report. Then they blow the manager's head off. The manager calls Superwest to say Disney characters are robbing the bank, but when he gets there Superwest sees three Woody Woodpeckers leaving the bank with sacks of money, but lets them go because they are Walter Lantz characters. Instead he squashes the three little pigs, who are apparently bystanders. Three generic cartoon crooks are then seen planning their next job, using Warner Bros. characters.

"Scanner" 6 p. -- Summary: A general from the Pentagon is lecturing on military uses of the spirit, when his head explodes. It is suspected that there is a spy in the audience. People keep exploding even after Superwest arrives. The spy uses his beam on Superwest, but instead of exploding Superwest only changes from a line drawing to an abstract painting, and Superwest uses his own beam to explode the spy. The action matches a pinball game that Superwest is seen to be playing, called "Scanner."

"Very Hot Dogs" 12 p. -- Summary: Vicious hot dogs with teeth and attitudes are killing people all over the city. Superwest encounters one at a hot dog stand. Part one of a three part story.

"100 Werewolves" 12 p. -- Summary: Superwest interrogates the hot dog, who says he's really a werewolf named George who got stuck in a meat-grinding machine that turned him into 100 immortal hot dogs that can only be killed by silver bullets.

"The Wild Night" 12 p. -- Summary: Superwest makes an appeal on television to people to kill their hot dogs with silver bullets. The silver bullet store makes a killing, and soon people are shooting steaks, wiener dogs, and everything, including 130 zucchinis. By dawn it's over.

"The Shadow" 6 p. -- Summary: An evil shadow commits senseless murders to lure Superwest into the open. When Superwest confronts him, the shadow seems to be defeating him easily. Then Superwest gets an idea, takes the light bulb out of his idea balloon, and uses the light to disperse the shadow.

   "Les Frères Bishop" (Cap'tain Swing) p. 3-66 in Cap'tain
Swing, no. 122 (Mai 2004). -- Summary: Supplies are low at
Fort Ontario, so Swing, Mister Bluff and Hibou Lugubre head
for town to see their supplier, Judge Davenport. On the way
they find at least four freight wagons destroyed, and they
assume the wagons had contained food for the fort. Another
traveler passing by says it was done by the Bishop
brothers, who for some reason only attack shipments owned
by Davenport. While Swing talks to Judge Davenport, Bluff
and Hibou try to get food from Davenport's cook.
Unfortunately Bluff has brought his dog Pouik along. Pouik
chases a cat, trips the cook, and steals a sausage. The men
never get fed, which supplies a comedic subplot to the
story. A young woman named Judith Plummer is working for
Davenport, who says he took her in because the Bishop
brothers killed her mother. One of the Bishops, Andrew, is
captured, and both Swing and Judith seem to recognize him.
Swing realizes he owes the man for saving his life, though
he never knew his name. Judith, we discover, is in love
with Andrew and they were engaged to be married before her
mother died. Davenport sentences Andrew to die the next
morning, so Swing breaks him out of the lockup in the
night. This leads to the unraveling of Davenport's schemes.
Actually it was "Judge" Davenport who killed Mrs. Plummer
and the father of the Bishop boys. Davenport framed the
Bishops to get control of their freight business. Finally
