a superstitious con man, and is having a streak of bad
luck. He goes to Kentucky, where he fakes paralysis from an
accidental fall from a railroad train. The railroad's
lawyers have his number, and conspire to send a fake swami
to the hospital. The swami tells Luke he has to pick a
sprig of local mint and hop back and forth over the
railroad track in order to win his lawsuit against the
railroad. The lawyers film the hopping, show it in court,
and send Luke on his way. And the local mint turns out to
be poison ivy. This story is humorous relief in a comic

After the fence opens his safe Karl decides he can take

bullets. Karl works hard to increase his wealth by running
a crooked race track in Europe, and coming back to America
he uses his wealth to become a crime lord. His brutal
methods make him a millionnaire, and Karl decides he is too
rich to die an ordinary death. In Tibet he finds a holy man
with a cursed medicine that will make a man live forever.
Karl guns down the holy man and takes the potion. Standing
on a mountainside, Karl realizes that he is paralysed. As
the birds eat his flesh down to the bone, Karl wishes he

marauders were doctors. His mania is believing he is a
