Summary: Day breaks in the suburbs of East
Saginaw, Michigan. As the sun comes over the foothills a
rooster crows in a farmyard. Then it malfunctions and flips
over. The year is 1888, and this is the home of Adolphe and
Arthur Caille, young inventors whose mechanical devices are
everywhere about the place. On this day they have invited a
Senator Sam Pinball to see their newest machine, a gambling
machine called the Black Cat. The senator agrees to help them
set up a tour of towns in neighboring states to test the market
for the machine. Pinball recruits his old friend Lucky Luke to
guide the inventors on their trip, and soon the sample machine
is loaded in a wagon and the party of three starts out. It's
less than an hour's ride to Yellow City, their first
destination, but before they arrive they encounter robbers, a
washed-out bridge, a treacherous waterfall, and a steep canyon
in which plains Indians are attacking the cavalry. In Yellow
City they are greeted by Senator Fishstick, who takes them to a
bar where men are drinking tea and playing dominos. The
ambience isn't quite what the inventor/salesmen had been hoping
for. It seems the senator's wife, Emma, is the leader of a
women's anti-gambling league. She promptly declares the machine
to be an instrument of Satan, but then she tries it and soon
wants to buy one for the League's meeting house. The next day
the party retraces its steps, heading for Poker Gulch,
Nebraska. After one night on the road they arrive at the town
and look for Senator Tricker. They find him right away, covered
with tar and feathers and being carried out of town on a metal
railroad rail. The citizens of Poker Gulch are so preoccupied
with gambling of every kind that it's difficult to get them to
try the machine. Lucky Luke lines them up a gunpoint to use the
machine, but before long the customers are fighting for their
turns. A professional gambler sees the success of the machine,
feels his livelihood threatened, and decides to ambush the
Caille brothers at English Pass. The gambler and his big
sidekick are inept, and are finally distracted by an offer to
join the Pony Express as a horse and rider team. Soon Lucky
Luke and the brothers have arrived at Death Valley, California.
They hitch a ride on a hearse to nearby Gambling Town, where
they get an order for 20 machines right away. Lucky Luke gets
telegrams saying that the Daltons need to be recaptured, so he
leaves the brothers to make their last stop alone, two miles
away at a not-very-promising place called Las Vegas.

"Spartacus" (Cap'tain Swing) p. 3-66 in Cap'tain Swing, no.
112 (Juillet 2003). -- Summary: A group of Redcoats
commanded by a Lieutenant Abbott stops at an inn where
Bluff and Hibou are waiting to meet Cap'tain Swing. The
innkeeper, Simeon, has had a run-in with the bad-tempered
Abbott before, so he runs off when Bluff offers to play
host. Abbott has a mysterious small chest with him that he
seems to be guarding with exaggerated care. Hibou and Bluff
are curious, so Hibou ties some pans to Pouik's tail to
distract Abbott, and Bluff switches the contents of the
chest for some stinky cheese. Meanwhile, a few miles away,
Swing is talking to Madame Meyer, a lady from whom the
British have just stolen a small chest of family jewels.
Also her husband has been missing for three days. When
Swing arrives at the inn the English soldiers have gone. He
and Bluff look at the jewels and Swing sends Bluff and
Hibou to return them to Madame Meyer and to look for her
husband, while Swing continues on his previous mission for
Dr. Strong. Another guest at the inn overhears and steals
the jewels. Meanwhile the Governor has presented the box of
stinky cheese to his wife as a gift, and Lt. Abbott is in
deep trouble. Three days later Swing hears a troubador
singing a ballad of Spartacus, and Swing asks the singer
where he can find Spartacus. The singer says he might not
even exist, but another audience member says to ask the
Redcoats, who have been humiliated by Spartacus a thousand
times. Swing meets Spartacus in a bar, goes to his hideout,
and asks him for Dr. Strong to join an American attack on
the British. Hibou and Bluff, thanks to Pouik's tracking
ability, arrive at the hideout at the same time on the
trail of the jewel thief. It turns out to be the wife of
Spartacus who stole the jewels in order to buy arms for the
resistance. It turns out also that Spartacus is just a
bandit and he is also holding Mr. Meyer captive. Swing
frees Meyer, returns the jewels, and kidnaps Spartacus for
trial in an American tribunal. -- Call no.:
