Virtues According to The New Columbia
Encyclopedia, Plato's cardinal virtues were wisdom or
prudence, courage,
temperance, and justice. The apostle Paul then added
faith and hope, and charity (which some translate
as "love" or "mercy")
to make the seven popularized by Dante. The Boy Scout Law later
contributed twelve more (though some approach paraphrase of the
earlier seven): Trustworthiness, loyalty, helpfulness,
friendliness, courtesy, kindness, obedience, cheerfulness,
thrift, bravery,
cleanliness and
reverence. The list will extend, because in normal use almost
any personal quality perceived as positive can be called a
virtue. See also honesty, for example.
