Summary: The Cotton Kid is entranced by his
big brother's stories of the exciting life of a Pinkerton
detective. The two brothers belong to the Beauregard family,
cotton plantation and slave owners in the middle 19th century
American South. Trevor, the elder brother, has to leave to
catch a serial killer, one William "Cigar" Klinton, who
preys exclusively on women and has been sighted in New Orleans. The Cotton Kid
sneaks away from school and stows away on the riverboat heading
south. The boat hits a snag and sinks, and the Kid, who doesn't
make it to the lifeboats, wakes up next morning floating
through the swamp on a roulette table with Alice Ivers, a young
woman gambler also known as Poker Alice. They are soon
surrounded by alligators, most of which are
then chased away by a giant alligator named Lafayette.
Lafayette is called off by a girl named Évangeline, who says
the old alligator is in love with her mother and eats all men
who come around, out of jealousy. Évangeline convinces
Lafayette that the Cotton Kid is too small to be a rival.
Évangeline takes Alice and the Kid home to her mother
(Clodice), her three sisters (Ozéna, Ronie and Alcée), and a
free Black woman servant (Sanité Dédé). The family is Cajun,
and items of vocabulary, custom and diet are introduced.
Meanwhile having survived the shipwreck, Trevor the Pinkerton
prosecutes his investigation among the young women of Bourbon
Street. In the bayou, a man calling himself Clapp unexpectedly
shows up at the home of Clodice. He says he's the new pastor
looking for his church. He looks suspicious to Sanité Dédé, who
redoubles her efforts to kill their last chicken and use it to
ask the advice of Ogun Ferraille. Clapp is soon beating them at
poker. That night the Cotton Kid goes through Clapp's pockets
and finds three playing
cards with something written on them. Clapp catches the Kid
and poles him unconscious to a neighboring island. Clapp then
returns to the house to kill the women. We have now learned
that "Rev. Clapp" is none other than William Cigar the serial
killer. Back at Clodice's island, however, he is treed by the
alligator Lafayette before he can do any harm. Clodice invites
him to a "fais-dodo," a typical Cajun celebration. She promises
to keep Lafayette tied up. Meanwhile the Cotton Kid is stuck in
quicksand trying to leave his island prison. He is rescued by
Zébulon le "Niguedouille" who poles by in a barrel, talking
about how he's going to jump the broom that night with Clodice
at the "fais-dodo." Zébulon wears a loudly ticking alarm clock
on a chain around his neck. He puts the Kid back on his prison
island and heads for the party. Eventually Évangeline misses
the Kid and poles out to bring him home. The party starts, and
Clodice and Zébulon jump the broom, but they're not officially
married until he gives her a ring. Zébulon has lost it, and
goes looking. Cigar Bill is looking for a missing playing card,
which Sanité Dédé helps him find. He tries to kill her for her
trouble, but she throws the card out the window, and Évangeline
grabs it. Bill grabs Évangeline and poles off into the night.
The Cotton Kid follows, riding Lafayette, who by now is ticking
loudly, having eaten Zébulon and his alarm clock. Trevor
arrives demanding to know the whereabouts of Bill Klinton, and
the Cajuns seal the Pinkerton in a barrel of maringouins for
interrupting their music. Out in the swamp Cigar Bill explains
that he is looking for the treasure of the pirate Jacques Laffite.
Laffite had four wives, and gave them each a playing card with
writing on it. The mother of Clodice was one of the wives. Now
that he has all the cards, he puts them together and they spell
Lafayette, the name of a nearby town. The Cotton Kid shows up
to rescue Évangeline, riding on Lafayette, who promptly eats
Cigar Bill. At Pinkerton headquarters, Trevor reports the end
of the serial killer and is assigned to search the town of
Lafayette for the treasure of Laffite. In the swamp we see
Lafayette the alligator vomit an alarm clock and a treasure
chest full of gold.
