"Resumen: la única editorial sobreviviente de la época de
oro de la historieta en Argentina, Columba, consigue sumar
a su plantel a un HGO que parece producir sus guiones con
mayor tranquilidad que in los últimos tiemmpos, y crea

Hernán Ostuni, Luis Rosales, Rodríguez Van Rousselt. p.
155-173 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios Sobre la
   Historieta, v. 6, no. 23 (Sept. 2006).
historias." -- Abstract: It is with Editorial Récord that
Oesterheld finishes up his prolific twenty-five years of
comics production that makes him, it has been said, the
most important Argentine adventure writer of all time. The
fact that he chose comics denied him the recognition he
would have had if he had ventured into conventional
literature. The fact that his choice was consistent with
his ideas during the most turbulent time in Argentine life
for the last hundred years means we will never know all
that he had left to tell in what was his profession:
storyteller." -- Abstracts as printed with the article,

HP and Giuseppe Bergman

HP and Giuseppe Bergman / Milo Manara ; translated by Jean-Jacques Surbeck. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1988. -- 118 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Adventures of Giuseppe Bergman ; book 1) -- Originally published in French as: HP et Giuseppe Bergman. -- Cover title: The Great Adventure. -- Adventure stor genre. -- Call no.: PN6767.M36H6313 1988

Part 1: "The Master of Venice" p. 7-22. -- Summary: Giuseppe Bergman has answered an ad for an adventure, which will be used to entertain the masses. The directions are imprecise, but the first thing he is to do is visit an adventure master named HP, in Venice. On the way he passes up some hitchhikers, goes swimming in the ocean and gets rousted at gunpoint, and has both a rioter and a policeman take refuge in his van. He gets kicked by a thug, sees an American Indian and a demon and finally finds HP.

Part 2: "The Boat on the Orenoque" p. 23-38. -- Summary: Bergman travels to the Orenoque River, and catches a riverboat. Fellow passengers are the son of an oil tycoon and his bodyguard, a lepidopterologist, a collector of Indian bones, and another wild and dangerous man. A woman and a little boy join the boat from a canoe, and the boy plays poker with several of the men. When the boy loses, he beats the woman, takes off her clothes, and gives her to the men to settle the debt. The wild man is hit by an arrow from shore, and falls into the water. Giuseppe Bergman is worried about the piranha, but the captain laughs at him saying the caymans keep the piranha away. The boat gets to its last stop, and Bergman buys it so he can keep going. The woman stays aboard, and HP appears.

Part 3: "Jaguars and Caymans" p. 39-54. -- Summary: The riverboat gets stuck in a rapids, the canoe is gone, and Bergman tries to go ashore and get a log to float people ashore with. He almost drowns, but is rescued by the wild man in the canoe and taken back to the boat. HP and Bergman leave the boat, while the wild man and the woman remain. Going ashore, HP soon disappears and Bergman gets lost, hit by a tree in the shape of a demon, chased by a jaguar and caymans, and captured by Indians. The chief warns him about mentioning names, saying in particular that if he or anyone says Bergman's name, Bergman will immediately die in pain. The chief gives him a new name, which means "he who converses with dogs," or in their language, "Bergman." Bergman ingests a drug, has a psychedelic experience, and sees the face of a woman and is told she is taboo.

Part 4: "The Road to Macondo" p. 55-70. -- Summary: Bergman can't sleep, so he goes to visit the taboo woman. To touch her is death, so they relate without touching. The wild man from the boat comes looking for Bergman, and soon the whole tribe is chasing Bergman and shooting arrows as he escapes into the jungle. Bergman and the chief discuss the fun they're having with Bergman, and the chief turns into a tree. Bergman visits Colombia looking for Macondo. He sees a demon, and steps on a rake that hits him in the face, twice, and decides to leave the story. All around him he finds other Europeans looking for Macondo.

Part 5: "At Gunpoint" p. 71-86. -- Summary: The group of people that Bergman finds himself among include a drug dealer and an addict, and the group is soon attacked by soldiers. Bergman hides in a bush while a soldier urinates on him. A bearded guerrilla takes him away and tells him to bathe because he stinks. Another man brings his blonde wife to the pond to wash. Violating severe warnings, Bergman decides to visit the blonde in the night, and finds a whole line of soldiers visiting her in succession. The guerrilla gives Bergman a beating, while demanding to know what he is doing politically in Latin America, what he was doing in Europe, and why he shouldn't be killed.

Part 6: "The Show Goes On" p. 87-102. -- Summary: Giuseppe Bergman is released by the guerrilla and leaves staggering and feverish from the beating. The blonde woman goes with him wanting to see Europe. They get into a swamp and she wants to catch a tapir. When she gets hold of it, he says actually it's a capybara, a kind of rat, and she screams. They bed down for the night, and a bat bites her, and he tells a bad joke. A lifeboat comes along with several earlier characters in it, and the blonde leaves with them. Bergman is then chased by an anaconda, and sees cloven hoof tracks of a demon. Then he sees an Indian in a tree, and assumes the Indian wants to kill him. Bergman gives a lecture trying to disassociate himself from the European conquerors, and ends up raving about his unlimited expense account. The Indian never says anything, but finally comes down from his tree and cuts off Bergman's head.

Part 7: "The Seven Names of the Devil" p. 103-118. -- Summary: Giuseppe Bergman's head finds itself back in Venice. Apparently his adventure was a success, because people all around are taking off their civilized clothing and throwing themselves into storybook activities. Chaos reigns, and the devil is revealed as the cause of it. Adventure apparently needs rules. Bergman wakes up with HP, who wants him to start the adventure. Bergman refuses, and HP leaves him, dropping a diary with an entry from Hugo Pratt's Fable of Venice. Bergman changes his mind and finds HP at a charity office, where he finds it hard to believe there's a chance for real adventure. Then HP shows him the feet of the man behind the desk, which are cloven hooves.
