Orient Gateway

Orient Gateway / Vittorio Giardino ; translated by Jeff Lisle. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1987. -- 64 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (The Adventures of Max Friedman ; 2) -- Spy genre. -- Call no.: PN6767.G5O7 1987
Summary: In 1938, David Stern slips out of the Soviet Union to avoid arrest, and arrives in Istanbul where Russian agents try to capture him. Stern is an engineer who knows a lot about Soviet industry. He finds a safe house in Uskudar (a suburb) and tries to negotiate passage to France. Two weeks later, Max Friedman is on a ship nearing Istanbul. Fellow passengers calling themselves Slatek and Magda Witnitz are actually Zmieika, a Soviet agent, and Magda Stern, wife of David Stern. When they arrive Friedman is kidnapped by Russians who think he's there to get David Stern (he isn't), and then rescued by Guy Varand, a fellow agent for French intelligence. Finally getting to his hotel, Friedman encounters Magda, who asks to be taken out to dine at the Kaplan. The place proves to be full of Russians. They escape, stealing a speedboat, and make it back to the hotel. Magda's room has been ransacked, so she spends the night with Max. The next day Guy shows up with instructions from Paris to find Stern and turn him over to the Russians. Max then finds that Magda is apparently following the same trail, and soon Russians are shooting at both of them. They escape, and Max visits Countess Sowinskaya, an old friend of his mother, for another lead. Max and Magda move to a different hotel together, and he sees her going through his suitcase. Moscow changes its mind and recalls Zmieika, who warns Friedman before leaving. Paris changes its mind and decides to offer political asylum to Stern. Magda reveals her identity as "Mrs. Stern" to Friedman, and they make the contact to get Stern out. She has the money for his passage. Guy Varand provides the boat, a French sailboat from Marseilles. Magda promises to meet Max as soon as David is safe and she can leave him. The next day the sailboat is stopped by a Russian ship and Stern is taken back to the Soviet Union, as arranged by French intelligence. Magda returns ready to shoot Max, but Guy steps in. Paris wants to stay on the good side of Moscow because of the upcoming war with Germany.
