Each year Paul, Pierre and Bachir spend the summer with
their relatives in cabanas near the sea, at Arzew,
northeast of Oran. Paul is Jewish, Bachir is Muslim, and
Pierre is Christian. They attend school, do wild things,
and follow the Tour de France together. They are friends,
quite simply. We are in Algeria in 1954. Little by little,
what was then called "events" will change their lives and
will cut short their carefree days. -- Originally published

Stel / Jean "Moebius" Giraud, story & art ; Jean-Marc Lofficier, Randy Lofficier, translators-editors, Starwatcher Graphics ; Marie Javins, Kevin Somers, editors, Epic Comics ; Robbin Brosterman, designer ; Florence Breton, colors ; Michael Heisler, Jonathan Babcock, letterers. -- New York: Epic Comics, 1994. -- 78 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Mobeius ; 9) -- Introduction and afterword place this story as chapter four in the "Aedena Cycle," which began with "Upon a Star" (Moebius 1), and continued with "Gardens of Aedena" (Moebius 5) and "The Goddess" (Moebius 7). -- Call no.: PN6747.G5A4 1987v.9

Summary: Stel is lost in the desert of the planet Aedena, pursued by a monster. Master Burg and some small winged people (aedelves) appear to him and he learns that Burg is the creator of the planet, that Atana is in need of rescue, and that the monster chasing him is the villainous Paternum, in a weakened form. Stel then falls in with a group of Nesters who don't know that the Nest is gone and Paternum has been overthrown, and who wear stifling uniforms and masks in the desert because rules are rules. They consider Stel an ignorant outnester, but he fixes their equipment so they tolerate him. The Paternum returns in a more powerful form and directs the group to a second nest hidden below a lake of molten lava. The Paternum appears to Stel as Trollopen, a character from "Upon a Star." Trollopen has been functioning as the devil on the planet Aedena for a thousand years. He is planning to use Stel as bait to catch the goddess Atana.

was 1933, four long years after Wall Street crashed and
took the rest of the world with it, and the Great
Depression was just getting started. And so was the Goblin.
A master at turning hopelessness into a commodity, the
corrupt mob boss led a colorful gang of circus sideshow
freaks-- including the cannibalistic Vulture-- in a corrupt
stranglehold on the city. Peter Parker came of age during
this time of struggle and hardship. Raised by his Uncle Ben
and Aunt May, two stemwinding Socialists committed to
positive change for the people, Peter would have been a
boyish beacon of optimism in any other era. But in this
world of noir, he was an embittered, angry young man in
search of justice. And then along came a spider. After a
fated meeting with a mystical arachnid and its
life-changing bite, he may have just inherited the force to
honor the phrase, 'If those in power can't be trusted, it's
