"The Replacement!" (Superman) / Cary Bates, writer ; Curt
Swan, penciller ; Dave Hunt, inker ; Agustin Mas, letterer
; Gene D'Angelo, colorist ; Julius Schwartz, editor. 24 p.
in Superman, no. 418 (Apr. 1986). -- SUMMARY: Aliens
Superman once met as Superboy ask for help in dealing with
a threat to their civilization. He agrees and one alien
stays to take over Superman's job. The news media name him
"Superman-X." Guns turn to dust, kryptonite turns to
sandstone, and people begin to think the replacement has
surpassed Superman. Superman-X cures hopeless diseases,
etc., but doesn't balance his deeds with self-restraint.
Lois and Jimmy show Superman-X a news story in which a
child with polio and leg braces is killed in the chaos of
people trying to get to the "savior" at the hospital gates.
Superman-X believes it and leaves in a wail of anguish, but
the tape was a fake, nobody has died, although the chaos
was real. The real Superman returns soon after (summary by

Balbo, the Boy Magician Feature in Master Comics
(1942-1944) with art and maybe script by Bert Whitman, according to the
Grand Comics Database Project. He also appeared in America's Greatest
Comics, no. 7 (Spring 1943), and there the GCD
suggests the script may be by Carl Formes. An occasional
related activity page is titled Balbo's Own Magic Page.
Series description: "Balbo was a young
magician. He had no superpowers whatsoever. All his magic
tricks are the result of skilled prestidigitation, and there is
nothing supernatural about them. He should definitely not be
compared to the many magician super-heroes with magic powers
who were popular during the Golden Age of comics. The Balbo
stories take place in a non-science fictional world. Although
Balbo frequently encounters events that seem impossible, they
always turn out to be based on stage magic illusions and
trickery. The stories sometimes open with Balbo performing on
stage.
The most interesting part of many Balbo stories was his
business partner in his magic act, John Smith. John Smith was a
non-stereotyped black man. Smith was intelligent, articulate,
honest and courageous. He always wore a suit and bow tie, and
was drawn by Whitman in a dignified, realistic manner. It is
quite startling to see such a realistic black character, in an
era that often caricatured black people. John Smith came up
with good ideas. Sometimes Smith would rescue Balbo from
villains' traps, sometimes Balbo would rescue Smith from
capture. There was a free and easy give and take between the
two characters. John Smith was a calm, low key person. He
rarely got excited in the tales. Instead, he tended to make
intelligent, practical comments on events around him, and to
try to help out and improve the current situation.
There were very few grown-up, black, continuing characters
in the comic books before the late 1960's. At the very least,
John Smith shows that the comics industry had the intellectual
capability of depicting black people in a non-stereotyped way,
by the early 1940's. If the comics industry did not include
such characters, it was because of a failure of nerve, or
through prejudice."
None of the Balbo stories I have read deal with civil rights
issues, or discrimination. They are not explicitly political. A
major comic book story advocating Civil Rights for black people
would soon be published in the Johnny Everyman series: the
untitled story about African-Americans (World's Finest Comics
#17, Spring 1945).

Balbo the Boy Magician (Oct. 1943)
"The Wrestling Cheese" (Balbo the Boy Magician) p. 55-64 in
Master Comics, no. 43 (Oct. 1943). -- Summary: Receipts are
down for the traveling magic act in the town of Cooper's
Corners, but Balbo gets an idea. At the end of his act a
giant six-foot wedge of cheese will take on all comers in a
wrestling match. John, Balbo's agent, is skeptical, as is
Percy Tibbles, the wrestler who takes the challenge at the
urging of his own agent. "Aw gee, I dowanna! I never
wrestled no cheese before!" After he loses to the cheese,
Percy steals it, and tries to hold a demonstration of his
own by beating the cheese the next morning, but he still
can't beat it. The cheese takes off across a tightrope.
Both Percy and Balbo follow it, and Balbo ends up having to
rescue Percy. It is revealed to the reader that a large
battery-powered gyroscope holds the cheese upright. Balbo
switches the fighting cheese for a real one, and Percy
steals it and tries to eat it for strength. Percy's manager
tries to sign the cheese as a wrestler. -- Summary (by
Michael Grost): "Balbo enters a giant, six foot piece of
cheese as a contestant in a wrestling contest. Surrealist
tale with a G-rated but utterly weird plot. Who would ever
envision a giant wedge of cheese as doing anything, let
alone wrestling in a ring? This tale pulls it off. Its
inventive plot is unlikely, but does eventually come up
with fairly intelligent explanations of everything
happening in the tale." -- Call no.: folio PN6728.M38no.43

"Le Livre Maudit" (Cap'tain Swing) p. 3-66 in Cap'tain
Swing, no. 114 (Sept. 2004). -- Summary: The Redcoat
soldiers arrest a man in the street who complains loudly of
his fate, but when he is taken to the commanding officer it
turns out he's an undercover agent, a traitor turning over
a list of patriots' names. Lord Marmaduke Langsburry, an
emisary direct from the King in London, witnesses the
transaction and asks to see the list. Lord Langsburry
pockets the list, then removes his beard to reveal that he
is indeed Captain Swing. In short order the traitor is
dead, and the fine carriage that brought "Langsburry" has
left at a gallop. The British soldiers take off after the
carriage, making it easy for Swing to sneak out of the
headquarters to hide with his old friend Professor
Griffith. The professor is puzzling over an old Rosicrucian
book he bought from an antiquarian book dealer in
Strasbourg. The reading isn't going well since it's
Greco-Latino-Hebraic in runic characters. By chance, a
soldier has seen Swing enter Griffith's house, so the
soldiers come and the two have to flee. Also there is a
sinister-looking bald man lurking in the house looking for
a chance to steal the book. The professor takes the book
with him, and they ride to Fort Ontario. Betty sets the
professor up with a place to study. The creepy bald man
returns to his home as well, on Black Skull Mountain, which
is not far from Fort Ontario. He thinks awhile, then sends
one of his superstitious Black servants, named Mumbulah, to
go to Fort Ontario on Lake Ontario and retrieve the book,
no matter whose life it costs. Meanwhile Griffith suddenly
figures out the book, and it makes him crazy. He babbles
nonsense and ancient-sounding words, and tries to kill
Mister Bluff's dog, Pouik, by hanging it by the neck with a
rope. Griffith's raving is so violent they have to tie him
up. Mumbulah arrives at the fort and tries to steal the
book, but gets locked up for his trouble. Hibou thinks
sorcery is involved. Taking the book, Swing rides out from
Lake Ontario for a few hours to a mountain cave full of
books, bottles and a smoking brazier. Swing asks the wise
man there to take a look at the book, and the wise man is
interested. He says to come back in a few days when he's
studied the book. Meanwhile, the strange bald man from
Black Skull Mountain shows up at Fort Ontario asking for
lodging. As he enters both Griffith and Mumbulah can be
heard raving from their respective lockups, and Mister
Bluff wonders if it might be the weather causing it. Hibou
says that Indians lose their spirit in captivity too, and
in sympathy lets Mumbulah out for some exercise. Mumbulah
sees his master and immediately commits suicide by jumping
from a tower. Then the bald man hypnotizes Betty from
behind without her having even seen him. He tells her to go
to town and buy a blue dress, and when she leaves the fort
on foot he kidnaps her. When Swing comes back from
delivering the book to his guru, a ransom note is found.
The Rosicrucian book must be brought to Black Skull
Mountain in exchange for Betty's life. Swing, Bluff and
Hibou retrace Swing's path to retrieve the book, and arrive
just as the wise man has deciphered it. He also starts
raving and has to be tied up. The bald man gets excited
when he mentally feels the book approaching, the book that
was "stolen from them at Tubingen." The man tries to
capture Swing rather than release Betty, and in the
struggle the book and the whole house are burned to ashes.
At that moment both of the raving scholars are released
from their spells miles apart. They get together at Fort
Ontario and agree that the destruction of the book was a
good thing. The one from the mountain, the one that Swing
calls "master," quotes Shakespeare: "There are more things
in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosopy."
