Kraken

Kraken / Antonio Segura, Jordi Bernet. -- Barcelona : Toutain Editor, 1984. -- 78 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- Contents: "A Modo de Introducción" text p. 3-6 ; "Kraken" p. 7-12 ; "El Rey de las Cloacas" p. 13-18 ; "La Muerte Blanca" p. 19-24 ; "Operación: Cebo Helado" p. 25-30 ; "Juego de Niñas" p. 31-44 ; "A Sangre Fría" p. 45-55 ; "Hasta la Vista Amigo" p. 57-66 ; "El Exorcistsa" p. 67-78 -- Call no.: PN6777.S45K7 1984
"A Modo de Introducción" p. 3-6 -- Summary: Illustrated text describes Metropol, the Spanish monthly comic periodical in which the Kraken stories first appeared. Metropol is also the name of the city above the hidden subterranean regions that are the setting of the stories.

"Kraken" p. 7-12 -- Summary: The surface police chase three robbers and kill one, but two escape into Sewer Three, out of their jurisdiction. Lieutenant Dante and the Subterranean Action Group take up the chase and kill the men. While fishing for the bodies they find an unexpected corpse, dead but still moving. Dante says that the Kraken has left a small part of itself to feed on the corpse, and that this is the Kraken's method of reproduction. He sends a red alert to all sections that the Kraken is in the sewers, and cremates the infected body.

"El Rey de las Cloacas" p. 13-18 -- Summary: A politician goes to the Subterranean Police to complain that the Kraken is interfering with the clandestine vendors under his protection. He threatens to go to the press and reveal the existence of the Kraken unless something is done about it. Lieutenant Dante interrupts the meeting with a sighting of the monster, and gets permission to attack it. The attack yields a fake Kraken, a frame held up by men under the power of a sadist who wants to be king of the sewers. The men surrender, all except one whom the police chase until they hear him being eaten by the real Kraken.

"La Muerte Blanca" p. 19-24 -- Summary: Dante and the Kraken patrol find a new tunnel, one that isn't on their map of the sewers. Upon investigation, they find themselves inside a slimy tentacled monster that consumes some of the men. Dante and Gregor escape, but Gregor has to retire because fear has aged him instantly, turning his hair white.

"Operación: Cebo Helado" p. 25-30 -- Summary: Scientists bring three frozen human corpses with locator signals in them, into the sewers to use as bait to catch the Kraken. The corpses are distributed, and soon the first one, the body of a young woman, is seen by their instruments to be in motion. Instead of the Kraken, they find an old proletarian soldier has taken her for companionship. The soldier has been hiding in the sewer and is still fighting a class war that ended fifty years earlier.

"Juego de Niñas" p. 31-44 -- Summary: Scavengers have been finding human fetuses in the sewer, and Dante's group is ordered to cooperate with a surface policewoman, Sergeant Maria, in investigating an abortion ring. They succeed in narrowing the focus of Maria's search by finding which pipe the fetuses are coming from, and Dante falls in love. Weeks later Dante gets a call in the sewer from Maria, who says she's sure she's found the abortion clinic. She's going to drop something into the drain to confirm the location, and he should watch the outlet pipe. Before she hangs up the telephone we see a menacing figure watching Maria, and when Dante gets his net in place under the pipe the first thing that lands in it is Maria's severed head.

"A Sangre Fría" p. 45-55 -- Summary: Dante is in the sewers with some new recruits and one of them has dunked the radio. An alert comes through, about a terrorist and a hostage in their area, but the message is garbled. Proceeding to the scene with the recruit and a sergeant, they find a man and woman struggling over a gun. The woman cries for help, so they kill the man. Then the radio starts to work and they realize she's the terrorist, and she has a gun still. With the recruit and the sergeant both shot, she runs out of bullets. The woman taunts Lieutenant Dante, saying he would never shoot a woman in cold blood because it's against the rules. The sergeant uses the last of his strength to lift his gun and shoot her himself, and then dies not knowing that there are two bullets in her body.

"Hasta la Vista Amigo" p. 57-66 -- Summary: Raul Castillo, an old college friend of Lieutenant Dante, has become a radio personality and is broadcasting adventure documentaries about the sewers and the heroic police who patrol them. Actually he is a drug addict now, and is working for cocaine smugglers, scouting out routes for them. When Dante figures this out he goes to visit Raul, and arrives to find he has committed suicide.

"El Exorcista" p. 67-78 -- Summary: A bunker is constructed in the sewers, and Father Spencer, an exorcist, is called in. Though Dante believes that the Kraken is only an immortal and troublesome beast, the Church suspects that it is actually Satan himself. In the bunker are a radar station, to watch for the Kraken, and a pulpit, so the exorcist can preach to it. Dante, with some of his men, and the priest's obnoxious assistant are also locked in for the duration. After nine hours of impassioned preaching the Kraken arrives, and the priest seems to die. After hitting the bunker a few times the Kraken leaves. The priest then comes alive again, and is shot by his assistant who thinks the priest is now possessed. The priest, dying once more, says that the assistant is the one who is possessed.

Kramsky, Jerry--Miscellanea.
"Conversation avec Lorenzo Mattotti" / Gilles Ciment &
   Jean-Pierre Mercier. p. 46-56 in 9e Art : les Cahiers du
Musée de la Bande Dessinée, no. 9 (Oct. 2003). Begins:
"Illustrateur et affichiste parmi les plus demandés,
Mattotti a su imposer un style immédiatement
reconnaissable.
librairies depuis quelques mois. 9e Art ne pouvait laisser
passer l'occasion de saluer un maître qui a tenu toutes les
promesses de Feux, l'album programmatique paru en 1986." --
English summary (from p. 126): "A Conversation with Lorenzo
Mattotti. Interviewed by Gilles Ciment and Jean-Pierre
Mercier, the great Italian artist evokes his comics debut
in depth, his acquaintance with Jerry Kramsky and the
Valvoline group, but also his approach to painting, posters
and comics. He pays particular attention to the genesis of
his two last albums: Doctor Jeckyll and Mister Hyde after
Stevenson (Casterman) and Le Bruit du Givre (éd. du
Seuil)." -- Includes bibliography. -- Call no.: folio
