Sergeants

A Sergeant is a non-commissioned officer in the military, or an officer of the police or some other military-style organization. In the story "A Sangre Fría" in the album Kraken, Lieutenant Dante and a police sergeant shoot a female terrorist at the same time, but the sergeant dies. See also the Beetle Bailey character Orville Snorkel ("Sarge"), and please scroll up and down from this box for many other sergeants.

to claim the bloody sand in front of you for the United
States. It doesn't matter that the sarge is dead and that
your best pal just stepped on a mine, you gotta keep
pushing and take the beach from those dirty Krauts. The
Germans aren't giving up without a fight though. They're
slinging hot lead hard and fast and it's only by the good
grace of Lady Luck that you're still firing back. Bombs
fall, bullets fly, and the closer you get to the tree line
the worse it seems to get, but the mission doesn't change:
Establish a beachhead. Do you have the guts to keep going?

"A Good Way to Die!" (Joe Yank) 8 p. in Joe Yank, no. 10
(Feb. 1953). -- Summary: A soldier's funeral is always hard
to watch, but the funeral of Joe Yank seemed, in some way,
even more painful. How could this happen to such a
fun-loving man, always ready to defend his country? The
story begins deep in enemy territory. Joe volunteered. His
mission was to crawl through a deep, dark tunnel to push
out the cowardly enemy Reds. His sergeant watches as Joe is
ambushed, captured and tortured. Afterwards, when the
Commies leave, Sarge finds the body with Joe's tags. The
Sarge doesn't know that Joe has been taken captive for
interrogation, and the body must have been someone else's.
With a little help from some Russian ladies, Joe
single-handedly takes on the Commies and wins his way back.
At the camp they all have a good laugh over the tricks Joe
pulled on both the Sarge and the Reds. -- Korean War story.

"Warpath" 32 p. in Fawcett Movie Comic, no. 13 (Oct. 1951).
-- Summary: Movie adaptation. John Vickers is a tough
former soldier with one goal in life: to bring justice to
the three men who killed his fiancée during a robbery. For
eight years he searches, and finally comes upon one of
them, Herb Woodson, in Kansas. Woodson dies before he can
say more than that the other two, Morrison and Bligh, have
joined the cavalry. On the way to Bismark to join the
cavalry himself at Fort Lincoln, Vickers meets a young
woman named Molly. In the process he beats up a bullying
Sergeant O'Hara, who was bothering her. Molly is traveling
West to be with her father, Sam Quade, who is the sutler at
Fort Lincoln, and whom she hardly knows. Vickers enlists as
a private, and O'Hara is his sergeant, and trouble begins
right away. The company is called out and soon pinned down
by Sioux Indians, and Vickers makes it back to tell General
Custer, their overall commander, the situation. Custer
promotes him over O'Hara. Molly and John figure out that
O'Hara is Morrison and that Molly's father is Bligh. Custer
and most of the cavalry are then killed at the Little Big
Horn, and Vickers becomes a lieutenant in what's left of
the unit, and he has to marry Molly. -- Call no.:

Sgt. Kirk

An western adventure series and magazine title. The character was created by Italian artist Hugo Pratt while working in Argentina, so there is a problem whether to call him "Sergente Kirk" (Italian) or "Sargento Kirk" (Spanish). The Italian spelling is used in the alphabetization here.
