Cold Blood

"Cold blood" usually refers to a lack of passion, but can also be used to describe acts against defenseless victims. In the story "A Sangre Fría," in the album Kraken, Lt. Dante is taunted by a woman who has just killed two of his men, then run out of ammunition. She knows it's against the police rules for him to shoot her while she is unarmed, or "in cold blood."

Cold war. Headline in the opening sequence "Nuke Talks
Collapse--Soviets Walk Out As Tensions Mount" The nukes
fall and seconds later the only one left standing is
Superman who can't believe what has happened, and then is
hit with major guilt ("I'm Superman! I should have done
something..."). It was a dream. He thinks about his dream
as he goes about handling other things noting how the dream
   isn't too far-fetched. "The two super-powers possess
nuclear arsenals big enough to blow up the world a few
thousand times over! Mankind has the technical know-how to
build these weapons--but do they have the maturity to be
trusted with them? They're almost child-like in their
comparison of weapons...each trying to outdo the other with
bigger, better 'toys'!" He knows he has the power to stop

Mercier. p. 75-83 in 9e Art : les Cahiers du Musée de la
Bande Dessinée, no. 3 (Jan. 1998).
-- English summary (from page
139): "From the Crimean War to the New Cold War. L'Histoire
de la Sainte Russie, released in 1854, was to be Gustave
Doré's last album. Basing his work on the writings of
historians of his time, he represents the Russians as a
cruel and bloodthirsty people and their history as a series
of massacres. While the album was being created, French
troops were engaged in battle against the Russian army in
the Crimea, but it was released just as peace negotiations
began. These circumstances explain its lack of success.
However, it is the only album of Doré's to have been
republished several times during the 20th century. David
Kunzle shows how this is related to Cold War ideology. --
