The Ghost Tribe

The Ghost Tribe / Jean-Michel Charlier, Jean "Moebius" Giraud, co-creators ; Jean-Marc Lofficier, Randy Lofficier, translators-editors. -- New York : Epic Comics, 1990. -- 46 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Blueberry ; 4) -- (Epic Graphic Novel) -- This is also the eighth story in the series known ad Confederate Gold. -- Originally published in 1982 as: La Tribu fantôme. -- Here in English bound with as published: The Long March. -- Western genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.C44G4713 1990

Summary: The Apache women, children and old men are dying on the San Carlos Reservation, and their army captors are barely sympathetic. Blueberry, Victorio and Chini arrive to attack the fort, but instead decide to sneak the tribe out. Chini sneaks in to get them ready, and under cover of night and fog the tribe leaves. Blueberry stays behind to sound a bugle call every half hour, like the guards they overpowered had been assigned to do. Blueberry then has a faked telegram sent, that has the army looking for them in the wrong place for several days. Red and McClure are part of the plan, supposed to be buying supplies with Apache silver to keep the tribe alive and meeting them at prearranged places. This only works once, because the second time they lose the money thanks in part to interference by the bounty hunter Shrieber. This means the tribe has to change plans and head straight for the Mexican border, where Wild Bill Hickok and a private army are waiting on a train. Chief Cochise hands over the "staff of command" to Victorio, and leads a diversionary force of elders so that the women and children can make it almost to the border. By the time the soldiers figure this out, Blueberry and Victorio have had a chance to prepare an ambush. The soldiers are mostly killed, and the tribe makes it to Mexico. Blueberry says goodbye to Victorio and Chini, and leaves to find Vigo and clear his name.

SUMMARY: Memín explores the reform school where Carlangas
is being held until he finds the right solitary confinement
cell. Carlos is happy to hear that his mother is still
alive, and tells Memín how the warden has whipped him and
locked him up for a crime he didn't commit. Memín is
noticed and taken to the warden, and the warden gets ready
to whip Memín. Memín jumps out the window and hides on the
school grounds. He hears two women talking about a ghost
sighting around the school, and with a sheet and some
stilts he scares the guards enough to make his escape.
Meanwhile Elisa, the nurse who knows Carlos is innocent,
visits Carlos's mother at the Red Cross hospital and brings
her up to date on her son's situation. Carlos's mother
brings up the fact that Carlos's father is rich and
powerful. Since he has never taken the trouble to even ask
about his son, she doesn't want to go to him for help. --
