Nadesico. Book two / Kia Asamiya. -- New York : CPM Manga,
   2003. -- 160 p. : ill. ; 19 cm. -- "In this pulse-pounding
second volume of the Nadesico series, the Kaguya's crew
makes a startling discovery: a space anomaly is actually a
missing interstellar cruiser lost years before, the space
battleship Yamoto. And pilot Akito Tenkawa pursues a
mystery of his own as he searches the surface of Mars for
clues to his identity and the origin of his Martian
tattoos, which he has no memory of getting. Then it's space
ships, mecha, and interplanetary adventure as the forces of
the Earth suddenly rise up en masse from their base on the
Moon and surround the Nadesico. Nadesico has great space
battles, pulse-pounding action, romance, and a glorious
sense of fun that lovingly satirizes space opera and

Summary: A little dog who lives on a farm rides an empty boxcar into the city. Life is hard and the dog is hungry until he finds a musician who eventually befriends him. A bouncer at one of the musician's gigs kicks the dog out into the street. He makes a friend, a girl dog, but then he is apprehended by a dogcatcher. A man from NASA comes and selects him for the space program, and he undergoes extensive testing and training. As he's being launched into space, his musician friend sees the dog's picture on the cover of a magazine. The launch is a success, but the radar from the ground seems to show the capsule destroyed by a meteor. Actually the dog has been taken into an alien flying saucer, where the aliens give him the gift of speech. After a time he gets homesick and returns to Earth, where his unexpected arrival gets him a lot of publicity. He rejoins his friend the musician, and then is called to address the United Nations, gets a college degree, and makes a record album. His image shows up on t-shirts and in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and he begins a campaign against pollution. A corporation puts a price on his head because of this, and the dog starts to talk revolution, starts drinking, and ends up on the street. He finds his girlfriend again, and they hop the boxcar back to the farm and raise a family. When the farmer asks him if he's the talking dog with all the publicity, he denies it and only barks.

Wonder Woman : Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter
Comics, 1941-1948 / Noah Berlatsky. -- New Brunswick, New
   Jersey : Rutgers University Press, 2015. -- 251 p. : ill. ;
24 cm. -- (Comics Culture) -- Includes bibliographical
references and index. -- Summary (from publisher via
SkyRiver): "William Marston was an unusual man--a
psychologist, a soft-porn pulp novelist, more than a bit of
a carny, and the (self-declared) inventor of the lie
detector. He was also the creator of Wonder Woman, the
comic that he used to express two of his greatest passions:
feminism and women in bondage. Comics expert Noah Berlatsky
takes us on a wild ride through the Wonder Woman comics of
the 1940s, vividly illustrating how Marston's many quirks
and contradictions, along with the odd disproportionate
composition created by illustrator Harry Peter, produced a
comic that was radically ahead of its time in terms of its
bold presentation of female power and sexuality. Himself a
committed polyamorist, Marston created a universe that was
friendly to queer sexualities and lifestyles, from kink to
lesbianism to cross-dressing. Written with a deep affection
for the fantastically pulpy elements of the early Wonder
Woman comics, from invisible jets to giant multi-lunged
space kangaroos, the book also reveals how the comic
addressed serious, even taboo issues like rape and incest.
Wonder Woman: Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter
Comics reveals how illustrator and writer came together to
create a unique, visionary work of art, filled with bizarre
ambition, revolutionary fervor, and love, far different
from the action hero symbol of the feminist movement many
of us recall from television." -- Call no.: PN6728.W62 Z5B4
