Ghetto 9

Ghetto 9 / by Adamov ; translated by Fershid Bharucha ; edited by Debra Rabas ; lettered by Adam Kubert ; cover design and interior production by John Figurski. -- New York: Heavy Metal, 1994. -- (Dayak ; 1) -- "Previously published in Heavy Metal magazine." -- In French this story is continued for two more albums, published in 1994 and 1997. -- color ; 45 p. -- Call no.: PN6747.A2D313 1994

Summary: In a future slum, located at and around Addis-Ababa, a mining company called C.P.M. is planning to extract natural resources without regard for the millions of human lives that will probably be lost. Dayak finds a boy, Li'l Quail, in trouble with gang boss Baron Legba's collectors, who have just received a weapons drop from the corporation. Mao, Dayak's ape companion, helps rout the collectors. Oba Petro, master of the ghetto, learns about it and is especially interested to hear that Dayak is a white boy. While Oba goes hunting with Simon Colbius of the corporation, a cyborg tries to kill Li'l Quail and Legba's men try to kill Dayak. Li'l Q. and Dayak go to a club, Dayak becomes fascinated with Baron Legba's date, Cori, and has to kill the Baron's brother to escape. Cori takes Dayak in and hides him, and Simon figures out that he's related to Dayak. Simon and Oba rough up Dayak's adoptive father Batiste, and Batiste decides it's time Dayak learned of his own past. Cori and Mao are kidnapped while Dayak learns that his real name is Azel, and that Simon is his brother. Dayak and Li'l Quail approach Legba's stronghold to rescue Cori and Mao. During the rescue, lava floods the sector. Simon has Azel and the others pulled out.
