Blueberry's SecretBlueberry's Secret / Jean-Michel Charlier and Jean "Moebius" Giraud, co-creators ; Jean-Marc Lofficier, Randy Lofficier, translators/editors. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1989. -- 56 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Young Blueberry ; 1) -- (Comcat Comics) -- Originally published in 1975 as: La Jeunesse de Blueberry 1. -- Includes three Blueberry chapters, and an early Giraud western story. -- Western genre. -- Call no.: PN6748.L5B55 1989Chapter 1: "Blueberry's Secret" p. 5-19 -- Summary: Mike Donovan is heir to Redwood, a Georgia plantation. He stops at a nearby plantation with a captive runaway slave named Long Sam. The love of his life, Harriet Tucker, lives there. Her father tries to get Mike to let Sam go, but Mike won't do it. Harriet's cousin Ronnie, also her suitor, gives Sam a gun and tells him to leave. Ronnie has been skimming profits from the plantation, and after Mike and Harriet's father have exchanged bitter words, Ronnie sees his chance to kill his uncle, burn the house (and the account books), and blame it on Mike Donovan. On the run with a reward on his head, Mike runs into Long Sam. Sam saw Ronnie kill Mr. Tucker before he left, and reluctantly agrees to testify just as Ronnie catches up with them and kills Sam. Mike makes it to the border and is picked up by Union soldiers. Donovan gives the name Michael Steven Blueberry, and joins them. Chapter 2: "The Chattanooga Bridge" p. 20-35 -- Summary: Blueberry is a bugler for the Union army, because he doesn't want to shoot any of his Southern kin. Not to be called a coward, he volunteers to sneak behind the lines and help blow up a bridge. With a Sergeant Wilson, Blueberry dresses as a girl and they take a coffin with both a corpse and dynamite across the lines. They plant the explosives, but the fuse goes out and they get caught before the bridge blows. Wilson escapes, but Blueberry is put in a jail. Blueberry makes a daring escape, gets on a prison train that is crossing the bridge, jumps from the train to the water, climbs the bridge, relights the fuse, and escapes back into the water as it explodes. He makes his way back to his unit, to find that Wilson is being decorated for blowing up the bridge all by himself. Chapter 3: "3000 Mustangs" p. 36-50 -- Summary: Blueberry's unit sneaks behind Rebel lines to sabotage a shipment of horses being gathered near Amarillo. They get to the area, but don't see any horses, so Mike goes into town to look around. Lewis Norton recognizes him, and they play a deadly hide and seek around the town. Blueberry eventually follows them to a hidden valley, and stampedes the horses. "The Emerald Lake" / story by P. Christin ; introduction by Joseph Gillain (Jijé). p. 52-56 -- Summary: In eighteenth century Brazil, Fernao Diaz of Sao Paulo spends his life looking for a lake of emeralds told of by Indians. He finds it, but dies before he can get back home. Story drawn by Giraud in 1966. These summaries are from European Comics in English
