Caesar, Gaius Julius, 100-44 B.C.

See also Julius Caesar (the William Shakespeare play).

Julius Caesar is a consistent player in the Asterix albums. He shows up in Gaul in the first one, Asterix the Gaul, on a fact-finding mission. Then in Asterix 4: Asterix the Gladiator Caesar presides over the games, which have been suitably sabotaged by Asterix. The sixth album, Asterix and Cleopatra, has Caesar demanding that a palace be built in Egypt, but he doesn't get involved much except for a little attempt at sabotage toward the end. Asterix the Legionary is the tenth album, in which Romans are fighting Romans and Asterix hands Caesar a victory, for which Caesar is properly grateful. In the next album Asterix and the Chieftain's Shield, Caesar gets the idea of staging a celebration of his conquest of Gaul, but as we know Gaul isn't quite conquered yet. Caesar turns up again at the end of the 18th album, Asterix and the Laurel Wreath, but mostly he's out of town for that one, while Asterix and Obelix are trying to steal the herbs he wears on his head. Asterix and the Soothsayer, the 19th album, has Caesar sending an order and an envoy from Rome to Gaul. In the 21st album, Asterix and Caesar's Gift, Caesar gives a retiring legionnaire the customary gift of a plot of land in the colonies. This time, for a little fun, he gives the retiree the village of Asterix and Obelix. Next, in Asterix 23: Obelix and Co., Caesar tries corrupting the Gauls using the profit motive. In the 24th album, the last written by Goscinny, Caesar is called in to judge the comparative bravery of the Gauls and the Belgians (Asterix in Belgium). Caesar hires a secret agent named Dubbelosix to find out the secret of the Gauls' magic potion in Asterix and the Black Gold, the 26th album. Later in the 27th album, Asterix and Son, Caesar's adopted son Brutus tries to steal a baby whose parents are Cleopatra and Caesar from Obelix and Asterix, who have been taking care of him. And finally, there is a movie tie-in, not really a comic, called Asterix versus Caesar.

Cages

In the story titled "The Cage," in the Hermann album Abominations, the security system of a group of post-apocalyptic survivors involves hanging one of their members in a cage by the door to keep watch every night. The title character in Gullivera, by Milo Manara, is put in a cage by Brobdingnagians and then carried away by an eagle. These things happen. It gets better: In The Cult of the Sacred Fire, by Vicente Segrelles, a chief's daughter in a cage hanging from a papier-mâché hot-air balloon needs to be rescued. Back on Earth, the story "Angry Black Man," the first of the Hardware superhero series, begins with a parable of a caged parakeet. See also The Squirrel Cage

"The Apes Who Could Make Fire" (Captain Marvel) / Otto
Binder, script ; Pete Costanza, art? 9 p. in Captain Marvel
Adventures, no. 114 (Nov. 1950). -- Introduction of The Ape
Mastermind. -- Summary: In central Africa (also called
"darkest Africa" here) a big game hunter comes upon
"natives" being driven from their villages by apes with
firebrands. Captain Marvel checks it out, and indeed the
apes are occupying human villages and using human weapons.
Captain Marvel assumes a human trainer is behind this
behavior. The apes can't talk. Monkeys and chimpanzees are
also acting this way. Captain Marvel next finds a band of
white men with firebrands chasing black people, and the men
tell him how to find their boss, whom they've never seen.
The "ape mastermind" catches and gags Billy Batson, and
explains himself. He was born extra intelligent, and knows
both human speech and ape language. He plans to conquer
Africa, then the world, because "humans have ruled Earth
too long!" The ape is about to throw Billy into a fire,
when the human henchmen arrive, curious to see what their
boss is like. One of them says, "We aren't low enough to
turn traitor to the human race by helping apes! It was all
a mistake!" The ape is put in a cage to be studied by
scientists for the rest of his "natural life." -- Data from
