"Angry Black Man" (Hardware : The Man in the Machine ; chapter 1) / Dwayne McDuffie, writer ; Denys Cowan, penciller ; Jimmy Palmiotti, inker ; Noelle Giddings, color artist ; Janice Chiang, letterer. 22 p. in Hardware, no. 1 (Apr. 1993). -- Call no.: PN6728.6.D3H28no.1

Summary: Curtis Metcalf tells how he had a parakeet as a child, that mistook being out of its cage for freedom and banged its head against a glass window time after time. Metcalf was a brilliant student in a working-class school, when he won a science fair competition and attracted the attention of Edwin Alva, a famous and rich white inventor. Alva gets the boy into elite schools and pays his way through several college degrees with the requirement being that he should work for Alva after graduation. The time comes. "Welcome to the family," says Alva. Metcalf gets a big salary, a lab, and instructions to investigate anything he wants to. Metcalf's inventions bring in millions, and Metcalf muses that Alva "seems more a father to me than my own dad ever was." After several years Metcalf asks the boss for a share of the profits, and gets a surprise. "You are not family..." says Alva. This is "rather like having one's dog suddenly announce that he's displeased with his living arrangements." Metcalf finds out that his contract won't let him quit, so he starts to investigate. Alva, it becomes clear, is in the illegal drug and weapons business. Metcalf's efforts to document this are a success, but when he sends the evidence to the FBI, the SEC, the police and the media, nothing happens. So, he builds himself a computerized battle suit that gives him flight, strength, weapons, and a disguise, and calls himself Hardware. He dedicates himself to foiling Alva's illegal activities. At the end of this chapter he is surrounded by an army of what look like clones, who call themselves "Reprise."
