-- Thesis (MA)-- University of Calgary, Department of
French, Italian and Spanish, 2005. -- Includes
bibliographical references (leaves 181-191).
Calvin and Hobbes de Bill Watterson.

Summary: Three law enforcement agents in snowy New England arrive at the town of Salem to investigate four mysteriously simultaneous deaths. The townspeople are reluctant to talk to them, and the Sheriff is uncooperative. They start finding dead bats around, which they interpret as warnings. They discover that one of the victims was having an affair with her pastor, that one was about to marry a Black woman, one was a writer, and one was an artist. The pastor killed his lover, and a mob killed the others for miscegenation and witchcraft, and they all know about it. Tom, a simple resident who digs holes and plays with bats, eventually explains it all to the agents, who leave town figuring there's nothing they can do about it. There is extensive visual reference to a story called "Undercover," by Wallace Wood, from Shock SuspenStories, no. 6 (EC Comics, 1952).
