World Without StarsWorld Without Stars / by J.C. Mezieres and P. Christin ; color, E. Tran-Le ; translation, L. Mitchell. -- New York : Dargaud International, 1982. -- 52 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- (Valerian Spatiotemporal Agent) -- Translation of: Valerian 3: Le Pays sans Étoile. -- Includes a foreword by William Rotsler, an introduction by Jean-Pierre Andrevon, and biographical sketches of Mézières and Christin. -- Science fiction genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.M48 V30313 1982Summary: Valerian and Laureline have been helping human colonists get started in a four-planet system called Ukbar, and are winding up a farewell tour when a crisis intrudes. A dark planet is on a collision course with the Ukbar system, and threatens to destroy everything. Landing on the planet, the Earth agents soon discover that it's dark on the outside, but hollow and inhabited on the inside, with a small star at the core. The inhabitants call their planet Zahir, and have no idea that a universe outside might exist. Valerian and Laureline join a caravan of Lemm, nomads who make their living by harvesting explosive flogums from the ground. The flogums are then sold to the warring cities of Valsennar and Malka, who expend them in their battles. The market is thus continuously renewed. Laureline and Valerian figure out that it must be the war that has caused the planet to leave its orbit, and decide to try to stop it. The cities are peculiar. Only men can go to Malka, and only women can go to Valsennar, so the agents split up and go with the next flogum delivery caravans, one to each city. In Malka, a crowded city of dark stone, Valerian finds that power is held only by by women, and that men do all the work. Valerian is soon conscripted into the military, and begins rigorous training. Laureline arrives in Valsennar, a sprawling city of pastels and canals. She wins a femininity contest through charming ineptness and becomes a favorite of the Emperor. Both cities are preparing for the next battle and have identical lighter-than-air warships and giant mosquitos that serve as bombers and fighter planes. The male-dominated city has decorated its warships more cheerfully, however. The Emperor brings his harem along in the flagship for the battle, and the agents see each other during the fighting. Afterwards they have both distinguished themselves and are given private rooms, so they can use their communicators. The plan they develop is to kidnap both the Emperor and the Queen and take them into outer space so they will understand nature of the universe and the collision that is about to happen. This works, a truce is declared, and the Malkans, Valsennarians, and Lemm all work together to gather a maximum number of flogums. Laureline and Valerian detonate the flogums on the outside of Zahir in such a way that the planet takes up a stable orbit in the Ukbar system, and the Earth colonists now have a friendly neighbor. The Emperor and the Queen decide to get married, as do great numbers of their subjects. This summary is from European Comics in English
