-- English summary (from p. 142): "Discovering Henri de Sta. A late nineteenth century cartoonist specializing in military humour, Henri de Sta (1846-1920) published hundreds of pages of comics in the satirical press of his time. His style of drawing has a very modern side to it. The Comics Museum invites you to rediscover this artist who is very well represented in its collections." -- Includes an 8 p. portfolio, "Henri de Sta dans les collections du Musée de la Bande Dessinée." -- Call no.: folio PN6700.N44no.4 ----------------------------------------------------- De Staël, Madam. After they've gone through a series of security checks, Tintin learns that Syldavia has discovered uranium in its mountains. The Syldavians are exploiting the find by building a nuclear rocket to the moon under the scientific guidance of Professor Calculus. Haddock and Tintin are to be part of the crew. A test rocket makes it to the moon and around it, but has to be blown up because some sinister conspirators have seized radio control. Still the engines are a success and the mission is on track. Along the way the making of a space suit for Snowy is a problem, as is a period of amnesia suffered by Calculus. The ship is launched and reaches 2,000 miles distance from the launch point, and still neither the Syldavians nor the conspirators have been able to make radio contact. Destination New YorkDestination New York / Herge ; translated by Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper and Michael Turner. -- London : Mammoth, 1990. -- 52 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Stratoship H.22 ; pt. 2) -- (The Adventures of Jo, Zette and Jocko) -- Sequel to: Mr. Pump's Legacy. -- Oldest copyright shown: 1951. -- A back cover blurb says the story was "originally created in the nineteen-thirties." -- Call no.: PN6747.H4J6313 1990Summary: Marooned on a tropical island with the Stratoship out of fuel, Jo and Zette are immediately greeted by a French colonial official who confiscates the machine because they don't have papers. The next day after a storm, barrels of gasoline float to shore, and they refill the aircraft's tanks, ignore the official (who looks and acts rather like a Thom(p)son), and take off going north. They miss Europe, and run out of fuel again on the Arctic ice. Jocko has run-ins with polar bears and guillemots, and eventually finds a family of Eskimos, who rescue Jo and Zette. After a storm and a seal hunt, Jocko is washed to sea on an iceberg. An Eskimo friend Iriouk delivers them to an ethnologist, Professor Nielsen, who has a radio, and Mr. and Mrs. Legrand finally learn that they are safe. Unfortunately the saboteurs also learn where they are, and Mr. Legrand's flight north to retrieve the children and repair the Stratoship is lost at sea. The deadline for making the transatlantic flight and winning the prize draws near. The Professor gathers his resources and has the Stratoship repaired on the spot. Jo and Zette fly the plane back to France. Mr. Legrand gets back from Scotland where a fishing boat had rescued him, just in time to stop an attempt to destroy the Stratoship. On the day appointed for the crossing, Mr. Legrand and his crew drink drugged champagne and fall unconscious for three days. On the last day before the deadline, Jo and Zette sneak into the plane and take off for New York. In America, squadrons of fighter planes take to the air to greet them, but also a stunt pilot hired by Fred Stockrise tries to crash with them. They land inelegantly but alive, and are reunited with Jocko whose iceberg had hit a ship bound for New York. The Stockrise brothers want revenge, and Fred Stockrise spreads a story that the plane didn't really take off from France but from the Azores. Though the story makes it to the newspapers and Jo and Zette are jailed, the authorities convince the journalist to reveal his source and Stockrise takes their place in jail.
