Die Galg is Jou Loon / skrywers, Sven Barsby & Danie van
Rensburg. -- South Africa : Naledi, 2015. -- 98 p. : ill. ;
20 cm. -- (Ruiter in Swart ; Nr. 1) -- In Afrikaans. --
Summary (from OCLC): Ruiter in Swart was one of the first
Photo Story Magazines published by Republican Press, first
appearing in 1966, just after Kyk/See, Mark Condor and Dr
Conrad Brand. Arguably the most popular "cowboy" photo
story ever published, the story features the character Ben
in the Lowveld of the 1880s. After his son is kidnapped, he
makes it his life's ambition to root out all evil and find
his son. When the series ended with issue no 491 (after a
run of 17 years), all Ben's attempts to find his son had
been unsuccessful. The role of Ben, Ruiter in Swart, was
played by Vonk de Ridder, an established actor at the time
with films such as "Voor Sononder" and "Kimberley Jim" with
Jim Reeves, to his credit. Owing to popular demand, Ruiter
in Swart Productions has brought this Classic South African
fiction hero back, producing a film in 2012. Vonk de Ridder
reprises the role of Ruiter in Swart, almost 30 years since
the last issue saw print. In this new film Ben is retired
from the ZARP (Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek Polisie), but when
he is called on to assist in apprehending cattle thieves,
possibly led by his long-lost son Eben, he has no
hesitation in donning his famous black outfit, strapping on
his gun belt and setting out on his black stallion to
pursue the criminals. Production of the film "Ruiter in
Swart" was completed in August 2012 and the DVD is now
available for purchase to the general public. The DVD will
not be distributed commercially. From the mid-sixties to
the early eighties, Danie van Rensburg, alias Vonk De
Ridder, was the hero of countless photo stories featuring
"Die Ruiter in Swart". Set in the diamond and gold fields
of South Africa at the turn of the century, he was the
traditional hero, the righter of wrongs and the rescuer of
damsels in distress. English photo story edition was
published in 1997, and this photo story edition in
Afrikaans was published in 2015. -- Western genre
fotonovela. -- Call no.: PN6790.S64 R8G3 2015

Pappa in Doubt / Anton Kannemeyer. -- Auckland Park :
Jacana Media, 2015. -- 91 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. --
Summary (from amazon.com via OCLC): With Pappa in doubt,
Anton Kannemeyer returns to the fertile land that he
explored to brilliant satiric effect in Pappa in Afrika
(2010). Once again parodying Herge's Tintin in the Congo
(1931), Kannemeyer exposes the contradictions and paradoxes
of life in the postcolony. The artist is as provocative as
he is playful, and does not spare himself the relentless,
humorous scrutiny to which he subjects politicians, despots
and his neighbours in the leafy suburbs. In addition to
drawings, paintings and prints, the book features extended
comics in which Kannemeyer traces the dawning of his
political consciousness as a young white Afrikaans-speaking
South African, whose life is entwined with the joys and
realities of Africa. His comics and other singular images
also confront and reflect on the racism embedded in
language and the physical and mental violence ingrained in
the deeply divided society in which he lives. -- Political

v. 36, no. 4 (Dec. 2010). -- "Photocomics were widely
popular in South Africa in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, yet
they have received little critical attention. This article
has two goals. First, it seeks to contextualize the
production and consumption of photocomics during apartheid.
Second, focusing on one popular form of the photocomic, the
Western, I look at how narrative and aesthetic conventions
of the form reinforced, yet simultaneously disturbed, the
apartheid state's fantasy of total segregation. Reading
practices fostered interracial contact in the imaginative
and affective spheres even while apartheid doctrine
attempted to prevent it. Conjoining text and photograph,
sequence and still, mimesis, fantasy, Europe, Africa, and
the Americas, the photocomic is not just an outmoded form
of popular entertainment, but instead connects readings in
popular culture with the formation of complex political
subjectivities." -- Includes bibliographical footnotes. --

-- Political
genre cartoons and some comics. -- Call no.: PN6790.S63

bibliographical references , filmography, discography (Ary

"Millions of viewers have enjoyed Saludos Amigos and The
Three Caballeros without realizing that these Disney films
were produced for a specific diplomatic purpose: as part of
an initiative to foster a spirit of friendly hemispheric
unity by countering Nazi propaganda efforts in South
America, so that all the Americas might stand together
against the Axis powers. This effort, the Good Neighbor
program, was initiated and guided by Nelson Rockefeller as
head of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs (CIAA), a
new government post created by President Roosevelt in 1940.
Beginning with the extraordinary research trip Disney
undertook in 1941, leading a team comprising his top
animators, artists, and writers from Mexico to Chile...

Rockefeller's program." -- Call no.: PN1999.W27K33 2009

South Vietnam.
The Best We Could Do : an Illustrated Memoir / Thi Bui. --
New York : Abrams Comicarts, 2017. -- 327 p. : col. ill. ;
24 cm. -- Summary (from OCLC): This beautifully illustrated
and emotional story is an evocative memoir about the search
for a better future and a longing for the past. Exploring
the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that
displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents
the story of her family's daring escape after the fall of
South Vietnam in the 1970s, and the difficulties they faced
building new lives for themselves. At the heart of Bui's
story is a universal struggle: While adjusting to life as a
first-time mother, she ultimately discovers what it means
to be a parent, the endless sacrifices, the unnoticed
gestures, and the depths of unspoken love. Despite how
impossible it seems to take on the simultaneous roles of
both parent and child, Bui pushes through. With haunting,
poetic writing and breathtaking art, she examines the
strength of family, the importance of identity, and the
meaning of home. -- Autobiographical genre. -- Call no.:
