Solidification.
"The Fog Cutter" 15 p. in Carapaces / Luc & François
Schuiten (Hollywood, CA : Humanoids Publishing, 2001). --
Summary: It is the fog cutter's duty to remove solidified
fog, and to release people who chance to leave their
windows open when the fog solidifies. The village cutter is
also a sculptor, and is obsessed with the body of a woman
named Ursuline. He is always peering at her through his
telescope as he makes a statue of her, and she is not
sympathetic to his attention. During a surprise
solidification he manages to get her stuck in the fog, and
to remove the fog in such a way as to create a mold of her
body. Abandoning the earlier carving, he casts statues of
her to the exclusion of his other duties. -- Call no.:

Solitary Confinement.
   "Fantasma" (Memín) / argumento: Yolanda Vargas Dulché ;
   dibujo, Sixto Valencia B. 32 p. in Memén, no. 16 (1983). --
SUMMARY: Memín explores the reform school where Carlangas
is being held until he finds the right solitary confinement
cell. Carlos is happy to hear that his mother is still
alive, and tells Memín how the warden has whipped him and
locked him up for a crime he didn't commit. Memín is
noticed and taken to the warden, and the warden gets ready
to whip Memín. Memín jumps out the window and hides on the
school grounds. He hears two women talking about a ghost
sighting around the school, and with a sheet and some
stilts he scares the guards enough to make his escape.
Meanwhile Elisa, the nurse who knows Carlos is innocent,
visits Carlos's mother at the Red Cross hospital and brings
her up to date on her son's situation. Carlos's mother
brings up the fact that Carlos's father is rich and
powerful. Since he has never taken the trouble to even ask
about his son, she doesn't want to go to him for help. --

children's cartoon cause riots? One of Mana Neyestani's
cartoons sparked riots, shuttered the newspaper he worked
for, and landed the cartoonist and his editor in solitary
confinement inside of Iran's notorious prison system. But
that's not the whole story. Neyestani exposes the complex
interplay between art, law, politics, ethnic sensitivities,
and authoritarian elements inside of Iran's Islamic
Republic. In his journey to escape imprisonment, the artist
travels from Iran to Dubai, Turkey, Malaysia, all the way
to China. Along the way he shines a light on the dangerous
and convoluted measures taken by refugees in their attempts
to find safety and freedom. Mana Neystani's story is at
once unique, universal, and truly Kafkaesque." --
