Los Pepines en la Educación Sentimental del Mexicano.
"Piel de Papel. Los Pepines en la Educación Sentimental del
Mexicano" (Debut, Beneficio y Despedida de una Narrativa
Tumultuaria ; 1) / Armando Bartra. p. 67-90 in La Revista
-- Abstract: In the first thirteen pages
of a longer essay, Armand Bartra directs a bird's eye view
(a precise, concise, all-encompassing view) of half a
century of Mexican popular graphic narrative. From nineteen
hundred until 1950 the author presents a history of the
first years of Mexican comics, carefully exploring its most
important exponents, as well as comparing it with the
development of the North American comic book of that age.
The decades of the 40's and 50's deserve special attention:
Bartra divides his panoramic analysis between the humorous
comic book corpus and the serious comic book one." --

Pepo (René Ríos)--Articles About.
Iturra. p. 46-50 in La Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios
historia." -- Abstract: Pepo (René Ríos) died in July 2000,
at the age of 88, probably the most prominent Chilean
cartoonist and the most complete Chilean graphic artist of
the 20th century. He was outstanding in political, sports,
adult and children's cartooning, as well as in book
illustrations and advertising. Condorito, his best-known
character, is not his only legacy in the history of Chilean
graphic humor. He also left a very important iconographic
patrimony that illustrates at least half a century of
Chilean daily history. -- Abstracts as printed with the

"El Cóndor Pasa" / Jorge Montealegre Iturra. p. 51-54 in La
1, no. 1 (Abril 2001).
-- Abstract: Condorito is the most popular and
international character in Chilean comics. He is more than
50 years old, and is a representative Chilean icon. Why?
The anthropomorphic representation of the Condor has been
in the collective imagination of Chileans since before the
'discovery' of the New World by the Europeans. This article
shows that from rupestrian art up to Pepo's character,
there have been many 'condoritos' in the history of Chilean
graphic humor. -- Abstracts as printed with the article,

153-176 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la
Historieta, v. 2, no. 7 (Sept. 2002). -- Covers the period
-- Summary:
"In this period foreign comic strips were setting the
pattern for Chilean comic book production and the use of
the balloon in panels is hesitantly accepted. The drawing
style is classic, monotonous and of many levels of quality,
but some cartoonists try new ways and some names stand out,
like Jorge Delano, Christie, Core, Percy, Nato, Alhue, and
Pepo. This period of time begins with the arrival of weekly
comics magazines like Don Fausto and goes up to the golden
age of El Peneca and Topaze and their imitations. This era
ends with the publication of the most famous Chilean comic
book character: Condorito." -- Abstracts as published with

"La Historieta en Chile (3)" / Cristian Eric Diaz Castro.
p. 219-239 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios Sobre la
Historieta, v. 2, no. 8 (Dic. 2002). -- Covers the years
1950 to 1965.
-- Abstract: During
these years the challenge for Chilean comic books is to
change, or disappear from the newsstands. Former big guns
disappear despite the publishers' efforts. Only the
geniuses will survive the times, and this thanks to the
power of satire. Technological improvements bring changes
in publishing. The Zig-Zag publishing house understands the
changing times and the tastes of the readers. This is how
the preamble to the golden age of the Chilean comic book
begins. -- Abstracts as printed with the article, with some
