Perchance to Dream

Perchance to Dream : the Indian adventures of Giuseppe Bergman / Milo Manara ; translated by Elizabeth Bell. -- New York : Catalan, 1990. -- 118 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 30 cm. -- "Adults only". -- Translation of: Rêver, Peut-être. -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6767.M36R413 1990

Summary: A nine-page illustrated text introduces a physical and philosophical setting of India, including a map. As the story opens military men are talking about evacuating a large part of Tibet so they can test a bomb there. With her producer, a woman named Francesca Foscari reviews videotapes that start by showing mystical knights-in-armor scenes, then quickly become blank. The crew that shot them was working on an experimental film, and has been missing for four months, last seen heading north from Kathmandu. Foscari is production director of the company, and is leading an overland expedition to investigate. With her are Steve, the scriptwriter, and Fabio, a cameraman. Their driver is Giuseppe Bergman. At each location represented on the videotapes, the appropriate tape suddenly becomes clear, if not comprehensible. They find evidence of the previous crew, but no clues about their fate. They visit a monastery, and an underground city, and run into another group of Europeans traveling the same way. The border to Iran is closed, so they load their van on a freighter to Pakistan. When they're almost there, the crew of the freighter, encouraged by a female impersonator among them, erupts into a kind of sex riot with Francesca Foscari as their target. This is interrupted by a boat that meets the ship, whereupon the whole crew abandons ship and it blows up. Francesca, Fabio and Giuseppe stay with the ship as it washes ashore, but Steve is carried overboard at the time of the blast. Meanwhile the military men have heard rumors that there is a monastery in the blast area, and so delay their bomb test. On shore, Francesca finds a woman who has video gear and a copy of one of the first crew's tapes. While Francesca watches the tape, the woman disappears, as do Fabio and Giuseppe, who have sighted a tugboat that they hope will help them salvage the van from the freighter. A naked holy man starts following Francesca around, but he won't talk. She takes the video equipment to a city, sells it, and takes a bus to her embassy. Steve washes up on the beach and has a desperate wordless six-page adventure of his own. At the embassy Francesca's story doesn't impress them much, but she finds a woman drug dealer who says she can find the video crew. Francesca borrows a car and goes to Benares, where she finds Pio, a cameraman from the first crew. Pio says both he and the director were on drugs before they even left Italy, which explains where all the money went, but he thinks he can find the rest of them. When they get to Kathmandu they find Giuseppe Bergman there ahead of them in the van. A sacred cow has eaten his travelers checks, and Fabio has joined an ashram. They find the original sound man, who has been dead for days, but he has left a map to a monastery where the others are supposed to be. Giuseppe, Francesca and Pio head for the monastery in the van, but lose the van in a ferry crossing. They continue on foot, and Pio soon decides to stop and have his ending right there. Giuseppe and Francesca come within sight of the monastery. Steve is already there, and sees them from the heights. On a high meadow, Francesca and Giuseppe become intimate for the first time, and the bomb explodes in a mushroom cloud.

the world of adventure with Milo Manara's most beloved
character, Giuseppe Bergman! Revered for his peerless

Bergman tales are hilarious send-ups of adventure comics.
Longing to escape his boring life, Bergman joins the

153-176 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la
   Historieta, v. 2, no. 7 (Sept. 2002). -- Covers the period
-- Summary:
"In this period foreign comic strips were setting the
pattern for Chilean comic book production and the use of
the balloon in panels is hesitantly accepted. The drawing
style is classic, monotonous and of many levels of quality,
but some cartoonists try new ways and some names stand out,
like Jorge Delano, Christie, Core, Percy, Nato, Alhue, and
Pepo. This period of time begins with the arrival of weekly
comics magazines like Don Fausto and goes up to the golden
age of El Peneca and Topaze and their imitations. This era
ends with the publication of the most famous Chilean comic
book character: Condorito." -- Abstracts as published with

1950 to 1965.
-- Abstract: During
these years the challenge for Chilean comic books is to
change, or disappear from the newsstands. Former big guns
disappear despite the publishers' efforts. Only the
geniuses will survive the times, and this thanks to the
power of satire. Technological improvements bring changes
in publishing. The Zig-Zag publishing house understands the
changing times and the tastes of the readers. This is how
the preamble to the golden age of the Chilean comic book
begins. -- Abstracts as printed with the article, with some
