Dorm Girls

Dorm Girls / Galiano, Marta, Pons. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1991. -- 56 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- "Adults only". -- Written by Marta & Pons ; illustrated by Galiano ; translated from the Spanish original, Internas, by David H. Rosenthal. -- First appeared in the Spanish magazine El Víbora. -- "Adults only." -- Genre: Erotic. -- Call no.: PN6777.G3 I513 1991

"Saturday Afternoon" p. 3-7 -- Summary: Four teenage girls get together to watch pornographic videos and talk about sex, while the building supervisor (standing in for his mother) tries to sneak peeks at them and ends up stuck in an elevator with no pants.

"Yearbook" p. 8-9 -- Summary: Not a story, but a cast of characters headed "St Mary's Boarding School for Young Ladies."

"Back to School" p. 10-15 -- Summary: The girls get back together, and soon a disaffected teacher steals money. Nina and Marnie had been in the dorm together at the time having sex, and are blamed by the teacher. They confess to the theft to avoid revealing their other activities.

"E = mc¸" p. 17-23 -- Summary: A new math teacher joins the faculty, and Marnie seduces him in his car after class. Another teacher sees him doing it and blackmails him into taking her out.

"Christmas Vacation" p. 24-28 -- Summary: Most of the girls leave for Christmas break, but a few have to stay. The girls get some polaroid shots of the gardener and a teacher in sexual activity, and use them for blackmail. First they make the teacher let a grocery boy in for an orgy in their room. Then they drop a hairdryer in his bath, and when it kills him they use the polaroids to make the gardener bury the boy without telling.

"New Girl" p. 30-34 -- Summary: The new girl and three others sneak out with some boys, and get arrested for doing cocaine. The new girl's rich father has also been hauled to the police station (with one of the teachers) for drunken driving. He bails them out.

"Class Trip" p. 35-41 -- Summary: The class takes a bus trip for an overnight at the beach. Some of the girls sneak out for a night of drugs and sex on a yacht, and another girl overdoses intentionally on valium, but is saved after her stomach is pumped out.

"Perverts" p. 43-50 -- Summary: The girls feel rebellious and start a fanzine to complete with the official school paper. They get some free time and go to a porngraphic theater and make some extra money fondling another customer. One of the teachers gets pushed down the stairs and becomes paralysed.

"School's Out" p. 51-56 -- Summary: The school year ends with a catalog of apparently usual catastrophes. A flasher is stalked and caught, though in the process the father of one of the girls is chased up a tree by dogs and injured. The last basketball game ends with a broken arm and a fistfight. The chess champion is drugged and starts eating the pieces. The headmistress is taken to the hospital but returns on her last legs to give her annual speech, during which the school catches fire.

The Dormant Beast

The Dormant Beast / Enki Bilal ; translated by Taras Otus. -- Hollywood, CA : Humanoids Publishing, 2000. -- 70 p. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- Originally published in France as Le Sommeil du Monstre. -- Set during the break-up of Yugoslavia, the story deals with individual, collective, developing and potential memory. -- Call no.: PN6747.B5D613 2000

Summary: Throughout the story, Nike Hatzfeld, the narrator, is remembering his early childhood in Sarajevo, starting when he was eighteen days old in a hospital, and moving daily to younger memories. The violence and flies in Sarajevo in 1993 parallel some of the events of the story taking place in in 2026. Nike had two fellow orphans with him in the bed, a boy named Amir and a girl named Leyla. They could see the stars through the bomb holes in the hospital. Nike is now a memory specialist. He doesn't know where Leyla and Amir are, thirty-three years later. Leyla works in an observatory, and visits her adoptive father in the Nedoud Desert. Nike meets with an old girlfriend, who turns out to be an android, and her new android boyfriend, who is killed by an exploding shell at the meeting. Nike sees a big fly come out of the boyfriend's head, then Nike himself wakes up having had painful nose surgery. Amir is living in Moscow. Nike soon reads about his own death in the newspaper, and is recruited to infiltrate the Obscurantis Order, a group dedicated to eradicating science, culture, and memory. Flies attack the orbiting observatory where Leyla is, and one lays eggs in her partner, so she jettisons him. Amir travels to a promised job with the Order, and though he is imprisoned he avoids being paired with a fly. Nike discovers that somebody has planted something in his brain through his nose. He doesn't know it, but an anti-Obscurantis group plans to use his implant to target weapons against the headquarters of the Order. Nike transfers his implant to a double, and meets up with Leyla in the desert, where he starts to tell her the story.
