Banana CongaBanana Conga / Hugo Pratt. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1986. -- 95 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Corto Maltese ; v. 2) -- Translated from French. -- Adventure story genre. Call no.: PN6768.C6B33 1986Part 1. "So Much for Gentlemen of Fortune" 20 p. -- Summary: Corto Maltese has an ace of clubs carved on whalebone, which gives the location of an island. On the island is a skull with a telescope mounted inside it, pointing to a tree stump. There is also an abandoned Spanish fort. It's part of a 200-year-old game, in which a treasure was hidden and clues inscribed on four different playing cards. Corto visits Ambiguity de Poncy, who shows him her ace of diamonds in exchange for a look at his card. She takes him to Captain Rasputin, who is crazy but has the ace of hearts, and the three sail for the island, not knowing where the fourth ace is, or what information it would give them. On the island another crazed man fires at them, and makes life difficult in an effort to keep them from the treasure. They follow him to the Spanish fort, where he fires the ancient cannons and knocks everybody down. Only Rasputin and Corto survive, and Corto pulls a mutilated gold coin out of Rasputin's wound. The treasure is dispersed. Rasputin and Corto decide not to tell anybody, but to sell the aces and the story to raise money. Back at his own ship, the mail comes with a letter from Gold Mouth that includes the fourth ace, on which is written, "inside the guns." Part 2. "The Seagull's Fault" 20 p. -- Summary: Corto Maltese is pinned down on a beach with somebody shooting at him, and a seagull keeps giving away his position. He is finally wounded, then rescued by a woman named Soledad who apologizes for the misunderstanding, and an Indian named Jesus-Mary, who wants to just finish him off. Soledad is part of a big family called The Evangelists, who have a reputation for praying with their victims before robbing them. The head of the family, Juda Lokäarth, has been mentally reduced to childhood by a blow on the head. Soledad says they're not really robbers, but just trying to get revenge on the gang that killed their parents. While Corto is there a son of the enemy burns down their house and kills Juda Lokäarth, and Corto saves Soledad's life. Corto likes them, and gives the rest of the family his boat and tells them to sail to Haiti and start a business with a bag of pearls they find there. Corto can't remember his own name, or anything about the pearls, and doesn't recognize Steiner when he comes looking for him. Part 3. "Mushroom Heads" 20 p. -- Summary: An antique dealer named Levi Columbia convinces Professor Steiner of some possible pre-Columbian ruins to be found in the Amazon jungle, as described in a diary seven years earlier by a dead explorer traveling with an anarchist named La Reine. The effects of the explorer as obtained by Columbia include some dried magic mushrooms, which are supposed to "bring you back into the past." Steiner cooks up the mushrooms and feeds them to Corto, hoping to cure his amnesia. Corto goes to sleep and dreams a whole expedition, including a Mesopotamian temple in the jungle, an encounter with La Reine, and a treacherous half-white Jivaro Indian named Aparia. When he awakes his amnesia is cured, and they visit Levi Columbia. Corto sees the shrunken head of La Reine hanging in the antique shop and pays to have it buried in a cemetery. Part 4. "Banana Conga" 20 p. -- Summary: At least ten people die trying to protect or acquire a small heavy suitcase, which is supposed to contain money with which to buy compromising documents that will change the course of a revolutionary struggle. Corto Maltese gets involved inadvertently, and tries to deliver it as a dying man requests, because the man mentions Corto's friend Gold Mouth. Trying to do so, he meets a young woman named Esmeralda who says Gold Mouth is behind the revolution, and an American revolution-buster named Sanders who works for a banana company. The banana company is trying to stop the revolution by tricking the American government into an intervention. Agents from both sides try to get the suitcase from Corto, and he falls in with a woman named Venexiana Stevenson, also after the suitcase. She seems to be working only for herself, and tries to steal Corto's boat and leave. Esmeralda shoots Venexiana from the shore, and then Gold Mouth herself shows up to say that the interventionists have given up and are leaving. The suitcase is full of old paper, but none of them had opened it before dying for it. These summaries are from European Comics in English
