Summary: Mike S. Blueberry is riding alone 20 miles north of the Mexican border when he sees Mexican soldiers chasing a man. He stops the soldiers, who are commanded by a Commandante Vigo, and sends them back to Mexico. Catching up to the pursued man, Blueberry spooks him and he plunges to his death in a canyon. On the body he finds an envelope addressed to the President of the United States. Returning to Fort Navajo, Blueberry is ordered to take the letter to the stagecoach line at Pima. Two weeks later a stranger bails Blueberry out of the Pima jail, where he is being held for tearing up the Yellow Irish Saloon. The stranger needs a guide to Fort Navajo. On the way Blueberry gives his benefactor a lecture about the worthlessness of officers, and then learns that the man is General McPherson, chief military advisor to the President, traveling incognito. The General is looking for half a million dollars in gold supposed to have been in the possession of Jefferson Davis at the end of the Civil War, but never found. The letter that Blueberry helped deliver had a clue to the money: A man in jail in Mexico waiting to be hung as an outlaw leader is the man who hid it. They don't know his name, or where he's being held, but they want to send Blueberry to get him out, and the gold. Blueberry negotiates a 5% commission, recruits Jimmy McClure and Red Wooley, and heads for Chihuahua. They travel separately. On the way Blueberry survives capture by a bounty hunter named Donnogan and by Commandante Vigo, and makes it to the city. Meanwhile a band of ex-Confederate soldiers, now outlaws, gets wind of the treasure and also heads for Chihuahua. Blueberry makes contact with the U.S. agent, code named "El Cuchillo," who turns out to be Chihuahua Pearl, the headline showgirl at the Casa Roja. She's a young American woman with a Southern accent, who tells Mike that the man he's looking for is named Trevor, known as Lindsay to the Mexicans. He is being held at Corvado Penitentiary. This penitentiary, which is nearby, is also the palace of Governor Lopez. Lopez is enamoured of Pearl, and very possessive. He sees them together and warns Blueberry not to go near her again. While waiting for McClure and Red to show up, Blueberry rides out to have a look at Lopez's prison. Meanwhile Vigo's soldiers and the ex-Confederate outlaws under Finlay and Kimball approach Chihuahua.
