hunted the Black Devil, a monstrous ebony whale, across the
seven seas for what seemed like an age, yet she always
eluded the stalwart sailor. Time and again she dodged his
harpoons and smashed his ships, but the years have come and
gone, the seasons have changed, as have the whalers'
weapons. Now instead of a harpoon and rope, the men use
explosive harpoon guns, and Cross is sure he'll defeat his
aquatic nemesis soon. But when he finally finds her in the
icy waters of the Antarctic, the vengeful sailor can't
bring himself to pull the trigger. Back in the old days
their battles were legendary contests of champions. That
was whaling, but this? This would be killing, and Jason
Cross would never disrespect so worthy a foe. -- Call no.:

Overgard. 12 p. in Black Diamond Western, no. 21 (Oct.

Basin, justice was in short supply until the day
quick-drawing Silk Hat rode into town and imposed his own

The Black Diamond Detective Agency : Containing Mayhem,
Mystery, Romance, Mine Shafts, Bullets / framed as a
graphical narrative by Eddie Campbell ; inspired by the
screenplay of C. Gaby Mitchell ; under the auspices of the
illustrious William Horberg. -- New York : First Second,

A rousing tale of the hunt for a mysterious train bomber.
-- Summary (from publisher via SkyRiver): John Hardin is a
desperate man. When a train carrying official US currency
paper explodes in his town, he's the prodigious Black
Diamond Detective Agency's sole suspect. John is innocent,
but his wife is missing, his old friends are coming back to
haunt him--with guns and explosives--and he's on the run
through rural Missouri. This graphic novel based on the
historical journals of Arthur James Quindlen, the agency's
founder, brings a new perspective to that time in America
when small farmers were the backbone of the country, graft
was rampant, and railroads thundered through western towns.
