translated by Laura Watkinson. -- Minneapolis : Graphic
Universe, 2015. -- 160 p. : col. ill. (blue & black) ; 24
cm. -- Includes bibliographical references (p. 159). -- "In
this graphic novel, Simon Schwartz weaves biography and
fiction together to explore the life of Arctic adventurer
Matthew Henson. Moving between different time periods and
incorporating Inuit mythology, Schwartz offers fresh
perspective on the many challenges Henson confronted during
his life. As a member of early missions to reach the North
Pole, Henson braved subzero temperatures and shifting sea
ice. As an African American at the turn of the twentieth
century, he also faced harassment and prejudice. Henson won
a place on Arctic expeditions through skill and
determination--though he didn't receive the same credit as
his teammates. He also won the respect of the native
peoples he met during his journeys--though he couldn't
prevent the harm that the expeditions caused them. More
than a biography, First Man: Reimagining Matthew Henson is
an artistic homage to Henson's accomplishments and the
complicated realities of being a trailblazer in a society
that didn't recognize black men as equals. -- Translation

Century: an era when lynchings were commonplace throughout
the American South. To most of the press, this epidemic of
racial murder wan't even news. But a few courageous
reporters from the North risked their lives to expose these
atrocities. They were light-skinned African-American men
who could 'pass' for white. They called this dangerous
assignment 'going incognegro.' Zane Pinchback, a reporter
for the New York-based New Holland Herald, barely escapes
with his life after his latest 'incognegro' story goes bad.
But when he returns to the sanctuary of Harlem, he's sent
on a new story-- the arrest of his own brother, charged

"Mickey Mouse's Surprise Visitor" (Mickey Mouse) 48 p. in
Mickey Mouse (Four Color), no. 268 (Mar. 1950). -- Summary:
Mickey gets a package from West Africa, and inside is a
young African named Thursday. In the funny-animal universe
of Mickey Mouse, where everyone is some kind of
anthropomorphic animal, Thursday is the opposite, an
"animalized" human. He is a trickster, interested only in
food and fun, and quite a difficult house guest. Only Goofy
can calm him down, and it develops as a kind of punch line
to the story that Goofy closely resembles a sacred totem
pole from West Africa. Toward the end of the story Thursday
won't stop playing a drum, and Mickey tries to get rid of
him by giving him to an African American jazz band, Cal
Cabaway's Congoliers. The band, drawn as dark-skinned dogs,
rejects Thursday because they can't get him to stop
drumming. It turns out that the drumming was a message to
his brother in Africa requesting shipment of his pet
elephant. When the elephant arrives things get even
crazier. Eventually, though, Thursday leaves on his own
because the people in Mickey's country aren't letting him
have enough fun. -- Call no.: PN6728.1.D4M5no.268
