(H)afrocentric. Volumes 1-4 / illustrator, Ronald Nelson ;
writer, Juliana "Jewels" Smith ; colorist, Mike Hampton ;
foreword by Kiese Laymon. -- Oakland, CA : PM Press, 2017.
-- 1 v. : ill. ; 26 cm. -- "When gentrification strikes the
neighborhood surrounding Ronald Reagan University, Naima
Pepper recruits a group of disgruntled undergrads of color
to launch the first and only anti-gentrification social
networking site, mydiaspora.com. The motley crew is poised
to fight back against expensive avocado toast, muted Prius
cars, exorbitant rent, and cultural appropriation. Whether
Naima and the gang are transforming social media, leading
protests, fighting rent hikes, or working as "Racial
Translators," the students at Ronald Reagan University take
movements to a new level by combining their tech-savvy,
Black Millennial sensibilities with their individual

Insider Histories of Cartooning : Rediscovering Forgotten
Famous Comics and Their Creators / Robert C. Harvey. --
Jackson : University Press of Mississippi, 2014. -- 192 p.
: il. ; 29 cm. -- Summary (from publisher via OCLC): "Many
fans and insiders alike have never heard of Bill Hume,
Bailin' Wire Bill, Abe Martin, AWOL Wally, the Texas
History Movies, or the Weatherbird at the St. Louis
Post-Dispatch. And many insiders do not know why we call
comic books "comics" even though lots of them are not at
all funny. Robert C. Harvey, cartoonist and a veteran
comics critic, author of several histories of comics and
biographies of cartoonists, tells forgotten stories of a
dozen now obscure but once famous cartoonists and their
creations. He also includes accounts of the cartooning
careers of a ground-breaking African American and a woman
who broke into an industry once dominated by white men.
Many of the better known stories in some of the book's
fourteen chapters are wrapped around fugitive scraps of
information that are almost unknown. Which of Bill
Mauldin's famous duo is Willie? Which is Joe? What was the
big secret about E. Simms Campbell? Who was Funnyman? And
why? And some of the pictures are rare, too. Hugh Hefner's
cartoons, Kin Hubbard's illustrations for Short Furrows,
Betty Swords' pictures for the Male Chauvinist Pig Calendar
of 1974, the Far East pin-up cartoon character Babysan,
illustrations for Popo and Fifina, and Red Ryder's last
bow." -- Includes bibliographical references and index. --

Showtime at the Apollo : the Epic Tale of Harlem's
Legendary Theater / by Ted Fox ; illustrated by James Otis
Smith. -- New York : Abrams ComicArts, 2018. -- 224 p. :
col. ill. ; 25 cm. -- Includes index. -- Summary (from
publisher via OCLC): "Writer Ted Fox and artist James Otis
Smith bring to life Harlem's legendary theater in this
graphic novel adaptation of Fox's definitive, critically
acclaimed history of the Apollo. Since its inception as an
African-American theater in 1934, the Apollo, and the
thousands of entertainers who performed there, have led the
way in the presentation of swing, bebop, rhythm and blues,
jazz, gospel, soul, funk and hip-hop-along with the latest
in dance and comedy. The Apollo has nurtured and featured
thousands of artists, many of whom have become legends. The
beauty they have given the world-their art-transcends the
hatred, ignorance, and intolerance that often made their
lives difficult. Today, the Apollo enjoys an almost
mythical status. With its breathtaking art, this graphic
novel adaptation of Showtime at the Apollo brings to life
the theater's legendary significance in music history,
African American history, and to the culture of New York
City." -- Historical genre. -- Call no.: PN6727.S58349 S47

publisher): "This tenth anniversary edition of the
acclaimed and fearless graphic novel features enhanced
toned art, an afterword by Mat Johnson, character sketches,
and other additional material. In the early 20th Century,
when lynchings were commonplace throughout the American
South, a few courageous reporters from the North risked
their lives to expose these atrocities. They were
African-American men who, due to their light skin color,
could "pass" among the white folks. They called this
dangerous assignment going "incognegro." Zane Pinchback, a
reporter for the New York-based New Holland Herald, is sent
to investigate the arrest of his own brother, charged with
the brutal murder of a white woman in Mississippi. With a
lynch mob already swarming, Zane must stay "incognegro"
long enough to uncover the truth behind the murder in order
to save his brother, and himself. Suspenseful, unsettling
and relevant, [this book] is a tense graphic novel of
shifting identities, forbidden passions, and secrets that
run far deeper than skin color." -- Call no.: PN6737.P56 I5

Uncorrected proof. -- 1 v. : ill. ; 23 cm. -- Summary (from
publisher via OCLC): "From bestselling author Max Brooks,
the riveting story of the highly decorated,
barrier-breaking, historic black regiment--the Harlem
Hellfighters. The Harlem Hellfighters is a fictionalized
account of the 369th Infantry Regiment--the first African
American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. From
the enlistment lines in Harlem to the training camp at
Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the trenches in France,
bestselling author Max Brooks tells the thrilling story of
the heroic journey that these soldiers undertook for a
chance to fight for America. Despite extraordinary
struggles and discrimination, the 369th became one of the
most successful--and least celebrated--regiments of the
war. The Harlem Hellfighters, as their enemies named them,
spent longer than any other American unit in combat and
displayed extraordinary valor on the battlefield. Based on
true events and featuring artwork from acclaimed
illustrator Caanan White, these pages deliver an
action-packed and powerful story of courage, honor, and
heart" -- Historical genre. -- Call no.: PN6727.W448H3

Ridley, writer ; Georges Jeanty, penciller. -- Berkeley, CA
: DC Comics, 2017-2018. -- col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- (Vertigo)
-- Complete in 6 nos. -- Summary (from OCLC): In 1962 Jason
Fisher was given astonishing powers by the United States
government-powers he used to defend the nation as the New
American. He and his teammates in the Civil Defense Corps
were real-life superheroes. Except that it was all a fraud.
A conspiracy. And now, 10 years after the CDC was torn
apart by racism, infighting and murder, the Corps'
surviving members find themselves pulled in very different
directions. Missy Devereaux-a.k.a. Ole Miss-is
transitioning from the First Lady of Mississippi into a
candidate for governor and defender of a vanishing and
hateful way of life. Amber Eaton-formerly known as Amber
Waves-has become a domestic terrorist, using her powers to
infiltrate and destroy the country's centers of power.
Somewhere in the middle stands Jason Fisher, who has
remained a crime-fighter even as evidence mounts that he is
accomplishing nothing besides propping up a system that's
rigged against him as a black man in America. In a nation
being torn apart, what does it mean to fight for the
American way? Writer John Ridley and artist Georges Jeanty
revisit their parallel Earth for a look at its gritty
1970s, a time frighteningly like our own. -- Superhero

Gravity Breaker / Jonathan R. Miller. -- United States? :
Jonathan R. Miller, 2016. -- 216 p. ; 23 cm -- "For Isaac
Williams, nothing comes easy. From his dead-end job to his
one-bedroom apartment, life so far has been a steady grind,
one challenge after another. But that's about to change.
During a routine encounter with a police officer in
Oakland, Isaac makes a life-changing realization: He can
use gravity to do almost anything. To build or destroy. To
lift up or hold in place. To bend, straighten, or break
apart. Isaac is suddenly in command of a power beyond his
wildest imagination, the power to reshape the world around
him, something that--as a biracial black man from
hurricane-ravaged Mississippi--he has struggled to do his
entire life. Filled with newfound hope, Isaac immerses
himself in the experimentation process: testing his limits,
broadening his skill set, and refining his control, all in
secret. But Isaac, a single father of an eleven-year-old
daughter, is forced to reveal the extent of his abilities
when his daughter is attacked. This sets in motion a series
of events that strips him of everything he's worked so hard
for: his child, his job, and his home. Pursued relentlessly
by the authorities, Isaac is forced to use his abilities in
increasingly dramatic and dangerous ways to avoid capture
and reunite with his daughter, ultimately learning that the
power he wields--though enviable--comes at a deeply
unenviable price." -- Superhero fiction, African American

Smith bring to life Harlem's legendary theater in this
graphic novel adaptation of Fox's definitive, critically
acclaimed history of the Apollo. Since its inception as an
African-American theater in 1934, the Apollo, and the
thousands of entertainers who performed there, have led the
way in the presentation of swing, bebop, rhythm and blues,
jazz, gospel, soul, funk and hip-hop-along with the latest
in dance and comedy. The Apollo has nurtured and featured
thousands of artists, many of whom have become legends. The
beauty they have given the world-their art-transcends the
hatred, ignorance, and intolerance that often made their
lives difficult. Today, the Apollo enjoys an almost
mythical status. With its breathtaking art, this graphic
novel adaptation of Showtime at the Apollo brings to life
the theater's legendary significance in music history,

Fire!! : the Zora Neale Hurston Story / Peter Bagge. --
Montréal, Québec : Drawn & Quarterly, 2017. -- 1 v. : col.
ill. ; 23 cm. -- Summary (from OCLC): Peter Bagge has
defied the expectations of the comics industry by changing
gears from his famous slacker hero Buddy Bradley to
documenting the life and times of historical 20th century
trailblazers. If Bagge had not already had a New York Times
bestseller with his biography of Margaret Sanger, his
newest biography, Fire!!: The Zora Neale Hurston Story,
would seem to be an unfathomable pairing of author and
subject. Yet through Bagge's skilled cartooning, he turns
what could be a rote biography into a bold and dazzling
graphic novel, creating a story as brilliant as the life
itself. Hurston challenged the norms of what was expected
of an African American woman in early 20th century society.
The fifth of eight kids from a Baptist family in Alabama,
Hurston's writing prowess blossomed at Howard University,
and then Barnard College, where she was the sole black
student. -- Includes bibliographical references. --

Summary (from OCLC): Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was
nineteen years old when she found herself in Paris for the
first time in 1925. Overnight, the young American dancer
became the idol of the Roaring Twenties, captivating
Picasso, Cocteau, Le Corbusier, and Simenon. In the
liberating atmosphere of the 1930s, Baker rose to fame as
the first black star on the world stage, from London to
Vienna, Alexandria to Buenos Aires. After World War II, and
her time in the French Resistance, Baker devoted herself to
the struggle against racial segregation, publicly battling
the humiliations she had for so long suffered personally.
She led by example, and over the course of the 1950s
adopted twelve orphans of different ethnic backgrounds: a
veritable Rainbow Tribe. A victim of racism throughout her
life, Josephine Baker would sing of love and liberty until
the day she died. -- Biographical genre, about an African
