"The Coming of the Falcon" (Captain America) / Stan Lee and
Gene Colan, story and art ; Joe Sinnott, embellisher ; Sam
Rosen, letterer. 20 p. in Captain America, no. 117 (Sept.
1969) -- Summary: The Red Skull, using the power of the
Cosmic Cube, has switched bodies with Captain America. He
tries to break the Captain's spirit by sending him to the
tropical "Isle of the Exiles." The Exiles (supervillains
named Baldini, Chang, Cadavus, Gruning, Iron-Hand
Hauptmann, and Krushki) attack thinking their enemy the Red
Skull is before them. A mysterious bird, a falcon, saves
Captain America from the Exiles. It is revealed that the
falcon is controlled by a Black man. Captain America
disguises the Red Skull's body using clay to make new
facial features, and thanks the man, remarking that he
sounds "more Harlem than Haitian." The man indeed grew up
in Harlem, raising pigeons on a rooftop, but on a vacation
in Rio de Janeiro he found a different bird, a falcon named
Redwing. A newspaper job advertisement brought him to the
Isle of the Exiles, but the Exiles don't actually hire
people, they enslave them. The two men talk about strategy
for defeating the Exiles, and Captain America convinces the
man (still nameless) to put on a green mask and costume to
"serve as a symbol to the natives." "The Falcon" is born.
Back in New York, the Skull enjoys impersonating Captain
America, though Modok, at A.I.M headquarters, is looking
for a way to make the Cosmic Cube power down. -- Call no.:

Fatherland : a Family History / Nina Bunjevac. -- New York
: Liveright Publishing Corporation, 2015. -- 1 v. : ill. ;
29 cm. -- "Standing alongside Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis
and Joe Sacco's Palestine, Nina Bunjevac's Fatherland
renders the searing history of the Balkans in the twentieth
century through the experiences of the author and her
family. In 1975, fearing her husband's growing fanaticism,
Nina Bunjevac's mother fled her marriage and adopted
country of Canada, taking Nina--then only a toddler--and
her older sister back to Yugoslavia to live with her
parents. Her husband and Nina's father, Peter, was a
die-hard Serbian nationalist who was forced to leave his
country in the 1950s. Remaining in Canada, he became
involved with a terrorist organization bent on overthrowing
the Communist Yugoslav government and attacking its
supporters in North America. Then in 1977, while his family
was still in Yugoslavia, Peter was killed in an accidental
explosion while building a bomb. Through exquisite and
haunting black-and-white art, Nina Bunjevac documents the
immediate circumstances surrounding her father's death and
provides a sweeping account of the former Yugoslavia under
fascism and communism, telling an unforgettable true story
of how the scars of history are borne by family and nation
alike." -- Autobiographical genre. -- Call no.:

Fantasy Flight Publishing, 1996. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 29
cm.-- (Percevan) -- Translation of: Les Trois Étoiles
d'Ingaar. -- Fantasy. -- Summary: A storyteller tells how
the legendary Ingaar struck his sword on a stone and
produced three powerful gems. On his death they were
dispersed, but whoever finds them and puts them back in
Ingaar's crown will gain wealth and power. Baron Deadstone
consults the wizard Zenzarael, who confirms the truth of
the story and suggests that the Knight Percevan may have
one of the stones. Deadstone and his assistant Polemic
sneak into the bedroom where Percevan and Blanche Stonefire
are sleeping and steal Percevan's ring. Using his magic on
the gem, Zenzarael is able to determine who has the other
two stones. Percevan's friend Kervin figures out who took
Percevan's stone, and they head for Deadstone's castle.
Zenzarael casts a spell to delay Percevan, which involves
his falling into the hands of the dark, evil and seductive
Balkis and her assistant Shyloc'h. Kervin and Balkis'
blonde, good sister Ariel rescues them. Percevan learns
from Zenzarael that Deadstone will be heading north to the
Land of Ingvaar to get the crown to put his jewels in.
While he's talking to the wizard, the wizard's cat
Belphegor scratches Percevan, and that night in an inn
Percevan loses consciousness. Deadstone, though he doesn't
have the crown yet, figures he's through with the wizard,
and imprisons him. As revenge the wizard sends Balkis to
heal Percevan. To be continued. -- Call no.: PN6747.F3T713

1972 Detroit, hard-nosed, chain-smoking tabloid reporter
Elena Abbott investigates a series of grisly crimes that
the police have ignored. Crimes she knows to be the work of
dark occult forces. Forces that took her husband from her.
Forces she has sworn to destroy. Hugo Award-nominated
novelist Saladin Ahmed and artist Sami Kivelä present one
woman's search for the truth that destroyed her family
amidst an exploration of the systemic societal constructs
that haunt our country to this day. -- Horror and detective
