Post-Apocalypse Stories

Stories set on a future Earth after some worldwide disaster. There are many of these in comics, and here is an introductory sample list. Please scroll up or down from here for others.
  • Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo is set in a future when a bombed-out Tokyo has been replaced by a "Neo-Tokho." It first appeared in Japanese in 1984.
  • Armageddonquest by Ronald Russel Roach is a series from 1977, in a fantasy mode retelling some parts of the Book of Revelation in 3 volumes.
  • Atomic Knights by John Broome and Murphy Anderson is a feature set "after World War III" when America has been devastated. Began in 1960 in the DC Comics title Strange Adventures.
  • Doomsday + 1 is a series by Joe Gill and John Byrne published 1975-1976. The apocalpyse consists of complete or near-complete devastation after the U.S. and U.S.S.R are each tricked into thinking the other has attacked.
  • Hombre by Antonio Seguro and José Ortíz is a Spanish post-apocalyptic series, represented in English by the album Attila, which is collected from translations that appeared in Heavy Metal magazine.
  • Jeremiah by Hermann Huppen is a Belgian series best known in French, and began in 1979. It has the feeling of a Western, set in a ruined future North America. Several of the three dozen plus volumes have appeared in English.
  • Judge Dredd begun by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra first appeared in 1977. Earth is generally a wasteland, with people living in "Mega-Cities," and the Judges are law officers empowered to mete out justice on the street, including executions.
  • Kamandi the Last Boy on Earth, by Jack Kirby, first appeared in 1972. After an apocalypse called The Great Disaster, intelligent animals rule the Earth. An American DC Comics feature, which has continued in various titles and which has been retrospectively connected to other features.
  • Killraven by Roy Thomas, Neal Adams and Gerry Conway is an American feature that first appeared in 1973. One of the premises is that the Martians of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds have returned for another try at conquering Earth, and have thus provided a post-apocalyptic setting.
  • Left Behind is an American and explicitly religious adaptation of a series of novels that began in 1995, about the End Times and the Biblical apocalypse. Only two of the novels (by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins) were adapted to comics (by John S. Layman, Aaron Lopresti and Randy Emberlin).
  • Planet of the Apes is based on a 1963 novel by Pierre Boule (La Planète des Singes) and first popularized in English in a 1968 film adaptation. A major comics series, including both film adaptations and new stories, started in 1974 at Marvel Comics, and the franchise has continued with different publishers.
  • Sabre by Don McGregor and Paul Gulacy appeared as a graphic novel in 1978 and later a continuing series of 14 comic books. The world of February 2020 is devastated by famine, leaked bioweapons, terrorism and energy crises, as Wikipedia puts it.
  • The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard ran from 2003 to 2019 as a comic book. The world is suffering a zombie apocalypse. Television adaptations make this familiar to more than just comics readers.

"Eden is both a brilliant love song to the post-apocalyptic
survival genre and an exploration on humanity's role in the
natural order. When a large portion of civilization is
wiped out by a brutal new virus, those who aren't immune
are either severely crippled or live only with
cybernetically enhanced or entirely mechanical bodies.
Taking advantage of a world in chaos, the paramilitary
Propater forces topple the United Nations and seek global
domination. In this cutthroat, cyberpunk future, Elijah, a
young boy on a personal quest, travels with an artificially
intelligent combat robot through a pitiless, futuristic

Postcolonial Comics : Texts, Events, Identities / edited by
Binita Mehta and Pia Mukherji. -- New York : Routledge,
   Taylor & Francis Group, 2015. -- 235 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. --
(Routledge Research in Postcolonial Literatures ; 30) --
Includes bibliographical references and index. -- Summary
(from OCLC): This collection examines new comic book
cultures, graphic writing and bande dessinée texts as they
relate to postcolonialism in contemporary Anglophone and
Francophone settings. The individual chapters are framed
within a larger enquiry that considers definitive aspects
of the postcolonial condition in twenty-first century
(con)texts. Authors demonstrate that the field of comic
book production and circulation in various regional
histories introduces new postcolonial vocabularies. These
scripts employ visual grammars, image-texts and iconic
   performances that reconstitute conventional
"image-functions" in established social texts and political
systems, and thus re-envision competing narratives of
resistance, rights, and freedoms. In this sense,
postcolonial comic cultures are of particular significance
in the context of a newly global and politically recomposed
landscape. This volume introduces a timely intervention
within current comic book area studies that remains firmly
situated within the US-European and Japanese manga
paradigms and their reading publics. It will be of great
interest to a wide variety of disciplines including
postcolonial studies, comics area studies, cultural studies
and gender studies. -- Call no.: PN6714.P635 2015

Postcolonial Memory, History, and Subjectivity.
The Algerian War in French-Language Comics : Postcolonial
Memory, History, and Subjectivity / Jennifer Howell. --
   Lanham : Lexington Books, 2015. -- 223 p. : ill. ; 24 cm.
-- (After the Empire: the Francophone World and
Postcolonial France) -- Includes bibliographical references
(pages 203-214) and index. -- Summary (from OCLC): The
decolonization of Algeria represents a turning point in
world history, marking the end of France's colonial empire,
the birth of the Algerian republic, and the appearance of
the Third World and pan-Arabism. The Algerian war of
national liberation therefore constitutes an inescapable
reference for today's global citizen. Students and
educators must recognize the broader implications of the
Algerian War and adopt innovative pedagogical practices to
identify and learn from historical misrepresentation. These
objectives are imperative given the West's misunderstanding
and mischaracterization of Islam and the Muslim-majority
   world. -- Call no.: PN6745.H69 2015

Postcolonial Westerns.
Le Nouveau Western de Jijé à Blanc-Dumont. -- Bruxelles :
   P. Briou, 1981. -- 32 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- Edited by
Jean-Michel Briou. -- Summary: Briou says the new western
reflects the modern approach to society, i.e., mirrors a
collective conscience that is post-colonial. This is a
collection of five short essays. Briou's first essay is a
survey, in which he calls Buddy Longway the first
"ecological" western. The second essay discusses
stereotypes, women characters and racism, points out that
there are few real workers in westerns, and that westerns
reflect the social attitudes of the time they were created,
not the times the supposedly depict. The third essay is
signed "Anne-Isabelle Petit & M.D.B.," and is about Native
American characters in Lucky Luke. The fourth is by
Laurence Harlé, and is about women characters in westerns.
The fifth, unsigned, is about the series Comanche, which
features a woman as the title character. -- Photocopy of

Mind the Gap : Absence as Signifying Function in Comics /

-- Thesis (Ph. D.)--Michigan State University. English,

185-196). -- Abstract begins: "This dissertation argues
that the gap, which according to narrative theory is a
characteristic of all fictional narrative, in comics works
at all levels of signification. Gaps or absences signify in
the drawn image, the page layout, the sequence, and
image-text combinations, as well as in the narrative.
Comics rely on the minimizing and absence of information,
rather than representation in detail. The notion of the gap
as an inherent part of the abstraction that is typical of
the comics image is established...." -- Call no.:
