Summary: A crew of men under a cruel taskmaster named Latigo is dragging a metal wagon across post-holocaust Europe. Every time they come to a habitation they kill everyone and tie the corpses to upright poles. Hombre is living in peace with four other people on a beached cargo ship, with a corral of wild horses. Latigo comes along and kills them for their horses, except for Hombre himself who is rescued by a mysterious woman named Attila. Attila has been stalking Latigo, to get revenge for his killing of her parents. She asks Hombre to join her, but he refuses, and instead tries to steal her horse. He does not succeed. Months later he and Attila are separately following the trail of Latigo, and they meet again. She is now traveling with three men, who capture Hombre. She lets him join them. They know that Latigo has to cross a certain bridge to get to where his hideout seems to be, and Hombre knows how to set up the plastic explosive and remote detonator they have obtained. The trap set, they settle down to wait. After a month their lookout blows the bridge, but it wasn't Latigo on it. Hombre thinks that the people thus assaulted will soon swear their own revenge on Attila's group, and so he leaves them. On a cold winter's day Hombre seeks shelter in a monastery. He is given hospitality and introduced to a project to save all the world's books, by monks who are busily reading and copying them. Hombre realizes how they are getting the books: one of the monks, Brother Guillermo, is Latigo. Hombre kidnaps and beats Brother Guillermo, then takes him far from the monastery and hangs him by the neck from a tree for Attila to find. Hombre believes in preserving books, too. He doesn't want Attila to associate Latigo with the project, because he trusts she will destroy everything she knows to be related to the killer.
