Water Margin : 108 Heroes of the Marsh / written by Shi
Nai'an ; adapted and illustrated by Huang Qingrong ;
translated by Wong Huey Khey. -- Singapore : Asiapac Books,
2007. -- 160 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. -- (Asiapac Comic) --
(Compact Classic) -- "Water Margin is well-known as one of
the four greatest Chinese literary classics. It tells the
stories of a group of heroes who stand for different
classes of people daring to struggle against the corruption
and oppression of the times. Altogether there are 105 men
and three women among the notable characters in the
Liangshan band. These stories take place at the end of the
Northern Song period and describe vividly the people's
lives of love and hate, ties of friendship, loyalty and
enmity, etc. This book relives the most stirring chapters
in the novel which have become the subject of numerous
dramas and films, and are the most popular episodes in
Chinese fiction. They include Lin Chong killing the
unworthy chief of Liangshan Marsh, Wu Song slaying a tiger
with his bare fists and avenging injustices, and Song
Jiang's attacks on the Zhu Family Village." -- Translation

Metro : a Story of Cairo / Magdy El Shafee ; translated by
Chip Rossetti. -- New York : Metropolitan Books : Henry
Holt and Company, 2012. -- 95 p. : ill. ; 26 cm. -- Summary
(from OCLC): When Shihab runs afoul of a loan shark, all
avenues of salvation in Mubarak's corrupt, oppressive Egypt
are closed to him but one: robbing a bank. Things go wrong:
In their blow against their crumbling society, Shihab and
his friend Mustafa happen on evidence of vice that points
to the upper reaches of the regime. On a wild chase through
Cairo's metro system, Shihab and Mustafa turn to family and
friends for refuge, which is offered only by Dina, a
muckraking journalist who, for Shihab, will take the
greatest of risks. In art as alive and immediate as Cairo
itself, Magdy El Shafee has delivered an arresting and
prescient portrait of a crumbling society and Egypt's
coming eruption. A powerful story of comrades on the lam
and an impossible love, Metro also sounds the cry for a
better, freer future. -- Call no.: PN6790.E343 S47M513 2012

Shield Bearers.
Goliath / Tom Gauld. -- Montreal, Quebec : Drawn and
Quarterly, 2012. -- 1 v. : col. ill. ; 25 cm. -- Summary
(from OCLC): This story reworks the David-and-Goliath myth.
Goliath of Gath isn't much of a fighter. Given half a
choice, he would pick administrative work over patrolling
in a heartbeat, to say nothing of his distaste for engaging
in combat. Nonetheless, at the behest of the king, he finds
himself issuing a twice daily challenge to the Israelites:
"Choose a man. Let him come to me that we may fight. If he
be able to kill me then we shall be your servants. But if I
kill him, then you shall be our servants." Day after day he
reluctantly repeats his speech, and the isolation of this
duty gives him the chance to banter with his shield-bearer
and reflect on the beauty of his surroundings. This is the
story of David and Goliath as seen from Goliath's side of
the Valley of Elah. Quiet moments in Goliath's life as a
soldier are accentuated by the author's drawing style,
which contrasts minimalist scenery and near-geometric
humans with densely crosshatched detail reminiscent of
Edward Gorey. Goliath's battle is simultaneously tragic and
bleakly funny, as bureaucracy pervades even this most
mythic of figures. Goliath displays a sensitive wit, a bold
line, and a traditional narrative reworked, remade, and
revolutionized. -- Call no.: PN6737.G35G6 2012

Les Chatiments de la Mer Morte / Fred Le Berre, Michel
Rouge. -- Paris : Les Humanoïdes Associés, 2006. -- 48 p. :
col. ill. ; 30 cm.
-- Detective and historical
