Neverland

Neverland / written and illustrated by Régis Loisel ; translated by Mary Irwin ; edited by Greg S. Baisden ; lettered by Roxanne Starr with Shannon Stewart. -- (Peter Pan ; book 2) -- Northampton, MA: Tundra, 1993. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 33 cm. -- "Freely based on the characters of Sir James Matthew Barrie." -- Call no.: PN6747.L57P40213 1993

Summary: Peter wakes up on the pirate ship amazed at his surroundings, and when invited, decides he wants to be a pirate. The inhabitants of Neverland try to rescue Peter to be their champion against the pirates, but Peter resists. Soon a faun named Pan is captive on the ship. Peter starts to understand the situation a little in conversation with Pan. Working together, Peter and Pan talk the captain into capturing some Indians with whom to feed the crocodile while they continue diving for the treasure. Only Pan can lead them to Indians. Tinkerbell warns the people of Neverland to be ready, but the pirates have already captured three Indians by the time help arrives, and Peter has been knocked senseless trying to fly without Tinkerbell's dust. The captain sends two pirates ahead toward the ship with Peter and the Indian prisoners. This party takes a shortcut through Opikanoba, a foggy nightmare region where thinking beings are inevitably killed. Peter is unconscious, and Tiger Lily is soon knocked out by a mean pirate, so they're immune. Pan makes his mind blank, enters Opikanoba, and drags them to safety with Tinkerbell jingling above the fog to guide him. During the struggle in Opikanoba, Peter has an unpleasant dream about his mother. After a sleep and some nursing by Tiger Lily, Peter accepts the offer to be their leader, and he asks to see the mermaids. The mermaids try to drown him, because that's what they do, and Peter thus learns another lesson. The album ends with Tinkerbell and Tiger Lily jealous of each other over Peter, and Peter still not having proven himself as a leader.
