Summary: Jeremiah and Kurdy head for the town
of Lerbin's Gate, where they've heard that somebody has escaped
from "Injun territory." Jeremiah is looking for his family.
They meet a magician named Pinkas, in the company of a strange
powerful creature called Idiamh, who is very sensitive to
light. At Lerbin's Gate they find the escaped man dead, and
also see Pinkas entertaining a crowd. They decide to scout
around the edges of Injun Country. As they enter a Forbidden
Zone, Kurdy is almost killed by a falling branch. The scene
changes to Injun country, where runaways are being hunted by
soldiers in dune buggies. Two soldiers spot Jeremiah and Kurdy
sneaking in, and after killing them Jeremiah and Kurdy see the
dune buggies in the distance. At the same time the soldiers in
the buggies see three runaways. Kurdy and Jeremiah interfere in
the chase, and the soldiers are killed or tied up, except for
one that was secretly helping the runaways. Jeremiah recognizes
one of the three runaways from years ago. As they are
retrieving the one dune buggy left intact, Pinkas shows up. It
turns out he's an agent for the Indians, investigating the
escapes on the "white side of the border." A psychic link with
the mysterious Idiamh gives him power. Idiamh can make a branch
fall by looking at it, for example. In a standoff, Jeremiah
flashes light into the eyes of Idiamh, and Kurdy shoots him.
Pinkas flees, and the soldier takes them back to their horses.
