   "Riquillo" (Memín) / S. Valencia. 32 p. in Memín, no. 1
(1983). -- SUMMARY: On the first day of public school some
of the boys are introduced. Carlos Arozamena (Carlangas)
has curly hair and is tough and full of mischief. Ricardo
Arcaraz (Ricardito) is a stuck-up rich boy with blonde hair
and glasses, the son of a diplomat. Guillermo Manquín
(Memín) is the only black boy in the class, and his
introduction brings derogatory racial remarks from the
other boys. Ernesto Vargas (Ernestillo) is very smart, but
poor, and comes to school without shoes. Carlos and Ricardo
get into a fistfight. Because of his attitude towards his
other classmates, the teacher recommends that Ricardo find
another school, and Memín cheers. The teacher gives Memín a
lecture about equal opportunity. On the way home from
school Memín makes friends with Carlos and Ernesto, and
warns Carlos that Ricardo's father is planning to complain
about the fight. At home, Memín helps his mother with
laundry, and Ernesto helps his father finish some
furniture. Carlos goes home, where his mother is sleeping
because she works the night shift. Ricardo goes home and
hears his mother threaten his classmates when she sees his
black eye, but Ricardo says he got it playing a game and
doesn't complain. Back at school, Ricardo is excluded from
the baseball game, and finally asks to play. Because he
wants to take charge of the game, the other boys reject

Summary: Jill and Nikopol live together in Egypt for two years, and make an unfinished movie. Then the pyramid ship appears above the studio and Nikopol takes off, leaving Jill three months pregnant. Niko, Nikopol's son, is finding out all this from the director, who has switched to making a film about Jill and Nikopol. Leaving the studio, Niko takes a train toward the equator. Most of the passengers aboard are animals, and the only other human passenger aboard is Yelena Prokosh-Tootobi. She knows his name and tells him he's a wanted man for killing the dictator Choublanc in Paris. She is a scholar of abnormal genetics, and Niko falls in love. They are heading for Equator City, a city run by a crime syndicate. The city has a micro-climate that holds its temperature steady at a minus six degrees. Their train is stopped by John-Elvis Johnelvisson, who asks for a ride because his plane was shot down. Johnelvisson is the champion chess-boxer of the northern hemisphere, on his way to defend his title in Equator City. Niko decides he doesn't like him. The pyramid ship is over Equator City when they get there. Niko's health doesn't check out well, so he has to watch Yelena go upstairs with John-Elvis, while he goes downstairs with the animals for treatment. While Yelena is having dinner with John-Elvis, we learn that she's trying to follow up on a rumor of an abnormal birth. On the lower level, a nurse recognizes Niko, taking him for his father, and describes the violent birth of Jill Bioskop's baby seven years before. Nikopol Senior has taken the name of Loopkin and is to be the opponent in Johnelvisson's chess-boxing match. Niko escapes, kills the nurse, sees a poster for the match, and figures out that "Loopkin" is an anagram of "Nikopol." Watching the match on a public screen, Niko realizes that Jill is next to him. He follows her when she leaves at an intermission, and talks to her, but she's not helpful. She takes a pill to erase her direct memory of Nikopol. The chess-boxing match continues, and Horus wins it for Nikopol by killing John-Elvis. The two Nikopols meet, but Horus leaves the father's body, erasing most of his memory, and the son can't make meaningful contact with him. While looking for Yelena, Niko is mistakenly kidnapped by the gangsters who run the city. They want to get rid of his father, and they launch him with their next satellite. The rocket goes too near the pyramid ship, which falls destroying both the pyramid and Equator City. Meanwhile Yelena has taken Nikopol north on the train, thinking he's Niko. They get back to the studio, and find Jill finishing the film. Neither Jill nor Nikopol can remember the other, and Nikopol leaves to start a life with Yelena. Jill's son is seen briefly, with the head of a bird like that of Horus.
