Digger, Dick.
"La Mine d'Or de Dick Digger" / Morris. p. 7-30 (plates
   1-25) in Lucky Luke : Spécial 1 (Marcinelle-Charleroi,
Belgique : Dupuis, 1979). -- Summary: Lucky Luke rides
toward Nugget City with Dick Digger, the prospector. Dick
is in a celebratory mood because he has struck gold, and
he's on his way to register his claim and tell his wife and
son. Though Dick is cautious enough to have hidden the map
to his gold mine in a rum bottle, he can't help drawing
attention to himself by spending gold nuggets and shouting
about it in a saloon. That night he is robbed of his
nuggets and his rum, and gets amnesia from a bump on the
head. One of the robbers is apparently a Mexican, named
Mestizo, and the other is called Big Belly. Lucky Luke goes
looking for the robbers, and after several days he finds
them just as they discover the map in the bottle. Lucky
Luke gets it away from them, and then lets them steal back
an altered version. At this point Lucky Luke disappears,
falling over a waterfall. Jolly Jumper, his faithful and
unusually clever horse, thinks his master is dead and is
about to commit suicide when an Indian fisherman pulls Luke
out of his net. Lucky Luke returns the genuine map to the
Digger family, while the false map leads the robbers to a
perch on a cliff ledge where they're easily captured. When
Dick Digger sees Big Belly his memory returns, and the
family rides into the sunset in its covered wagon to
exploit the mine. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L8 1979

Story summaries:

Chapter 1. 25 p. -- Summary: The scene is Gotham City, "sometime into the next century." Most of life is computer controlled. The work of police officers Jim Gordon and Lena Schwartz is being interfered with by computer controlled robots, called enforcer servos. After an inexplicable massacre perpetrated by the enforcers, Jim complains to the media that the servos were controlled from the mainframe, but when the news is broadcast he is seen saying something completely different. Jim is frustrated. The news switches to the doings of a rock star named Gata, and Jim falls asleep. Lena calls Jim on his day off with another suspicious killing by a servo, and together they search the mainframe for information. Their searches trigger alarms in the the office of their boss, Captain Grover. Grover orders him to drop the investigation, and go be a bodyguard for Gata, who has been getting threats. As Jim Gordon tries to board a train, a ticket machine malfunctions and threatens to kill him, while every screen in the station shows a big laughing mouth.

Chapter 2. 23 p. -- Summary: From the lobby of a concert by Gata, Jim calls Lena. She has learned that before each of the rogue servo actions, a "telepresence" meeting of people who don't seem to exist has been held. She has been able to copy some of the data. A group of armed people charges the stage, and Jim breaks off the call to save Gata's life. During the action two enforcer servos show up unexpectedly and liquidate the assailants. Gata doesn't appreciate Jim's help, and dresses him down, but thinks he's cute. Meanwhile a group of virtual personalities is reporting to the Mayor of the city, when another force seen as a big laughing mouth interrupts them and asserts its supremacy over them. When Jim gets home he is locked out of his terminal and his bank accounts, and asks for help from an underground computer friend called the Knowman. About the telepresence meetings, the Knowman says the access involved is too high up to safely investigate, but that if Jim has some offline information he'll look at it. The media then announce that Lena has been killed by an enforcer servo. In shock, Jim goes to a park and stumbles upon a statue of Batman. Jim's grandfather was Batman's friend, Commissioner Gordon, and Jim has a Batman costume given to his grandfather by Bruce Wayne. Soon Batman is abroad in the night, interfering with the drug trade. Before very long he is on the cover of Time, and reports about him are cutting into Gata's media exposure. Gata decides to do something about it. Meanwhile the Mayor is also upset and consults her virtual advisors. The smile icon, now expanded into a sketchy red, white and green face, annouces to them that he will take care of this Batman, because there's nothing that can stop the Joker Virus.

Chapter 3. 23 p. -- Summary: At Lena's funeral, Captain Grover gives Jim a disk that he took from Lena's body, and the Knowman uses the disc to link the rogue servos with the Mayor. Sneaking into the Mayor's building as Batman, Jim is met by an enforcer. After a struggle and an investigation, the enforcer tries to execute Batman, but some other computer force prevents the execution. Rock star Gata goes to the media dressed as Catwoman, and challenges Batman. Chang, a boy that Gordon has unofficially adopted, does some research and makes a Robin costume. Not knowing why he is still alive, Jim returns to his apartment, which is soon surrounded by killer servos. A mysterious warning sends Jim and Chang to the roof of their building, where a flying Batcraft awaits them, and takes them to the original Batcave. A virtual Batman and a robot Alfred have responded to the media reports of a new Batman, and are ready to give Jim and Chang the training and equipment they need.

Chapter 4. 25 p. -- Summary: Batman and Robin soon have the evil virtual personalities deleted, except for the Joker Virus. The virtual Batman takes on the Joker, video game style, while the "real" Batman goes to the Mayor's office. Catwoman is in front of the building with her followers, and attacks him, but he kisses her and she recognizes him. The mayor calls in troops and servos to digitize the real Batman, and then deletes the file. Back at the Batcave, Alfred restarts the Batman program on an isolated computer, then sends him into the net to defeat the Joker. The mayor is happy that the Joker is gone, and reveals that Gata/Catwoman is actually a clone of herself. The digitizing of the Batman somehow reverses itself, and Batman, Catwoman, and Robin are left wondering who won, and if they should take their costumes off now.
