An Author in Search of Six Characters

An Author in Search of Six Characters / Milo Manara ; translated from the French original, Un Auteur en Quete de Six Personnages, by Jean-Jacques Surbeck. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1989. -- 80 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The African Adventures of Giuseppe Bergman ; pt. 1) -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6767.M36A813 1989

Chapter 1: "The Lead" p. 7-26. -- Summary: Giuseppe is waiting with his producer and a sealed script for the adventure to start, but the female lead hasn't arrived. She's the only professional actress in the story, but shows up only to say she can't stay, because of a technicians' strike. A woman named Cosette comes in with the costumes, and the actress suggests they work with her, as the costumes will fit her just as well. While Cosette reluctantly gets into costume, Bergman explains the plot. The ancient Incas had solar generating equipment that Pizarro mistook for temples and destroyed, and their techniques were lost until recently. The star's secretary, Miss St. Ambrogio, interrupts and takes charge. She has Cosette beaten because her costume is too modest for the hooker role she is to play. Cosette is placed on a corner and given instructions about a briefcase, but things don't go as expected. She falls into the hands of a pimp, but escapes by jumping from a window naked. Her clothes land on top of a car that takes off, and as Cosette tries to retrieve them she ends up in the hands of a bar full of men.

Chapter 2: "Where Are We Now?" p. 27-44. -- Summary: Cosette hides in the bathroom and the bar closes. Giuseppe Bergman is outside the window, and passes her most of her clothes, but the window is too small to get through. Cosette gets drunk, while Giuseppe tries to get her to help decide what to do with the briefcase with the Incan solar energy conversion plans. A Rastifarian man appears to Cosette and dances with her, and she falls unconscious. When she wakes up, Cosette knows they should take the briefcase to Zion, which is near Ethiopia. They run out of gas in North Africa, and Cosette decides to raise money from a German truckdriver. Giuseppe falls into conversation with a man, about height, and the man says he has a woman in his bag who is only one foot three inches tall. Before he can find out more, Giuseppe learns that the truckdriver has left with Cosette, and he takes off to follow riding on the back of a moped.

Chapter 3: "The Event of the Century" p. 45-61. -- Summary: Giuseppe and the owner of the moped catch up with the truck, and find it abandoned, with no clue about what happened to Cosette and the German. They put the moped in the truck and proceed along the road to a kind of night club in the desert, where Miss St. Ambrogio has a table. She tells him to hand over the bag and leave, because that's what the script says. He demands to see Cosette first, which he does, then goes to get the bag from the truck. The script has Cosette handing the bag over to an actor named Harvey in a big production scene. Cosette gets fed up with it, and tries to refuse, but is told her part in the script is only erotic and if she doesn't go along she'll be erased. Bergman, already out of the script, runs for the truck and crashes the set. The Rastifarian starts a drumbeat that has people everywhere running to jump into a big pit.

Chapter 4: "All Join In" p. 63-80. -- Summary: The Rastifarian drums out a history of European decadence and exploitation, but he's actually not in the script so Miss St. Ambrogio stops him. After some costume changes and set construction, the final scene begins with people celebrating the coming of a new age of inexpensive, non-polluting energy. The love scene is interrupted by cartoon natives, who then take off after the leading man. Giuseppe Bergman in a Tarzan costume swings down to stop them, but ends up hanging above them on a rope, then falling into a tiger pit. Giuseppe returns to Cosette, but she sends him away. She gets a telephone call on the set with an apology for having treated her as as sex object. Then a man gives a speech about chastising erotic excess, and we see Cosette dead with her hand cut off and the telephone stuffed in her mouth.

It all went askew from the start when the director of a small, off-off-off Broadway play didn't show up. Then the lead actress pulled the same. What we ended up with is a sadomasochistic secretary directing, a naive, simple seamstress as star, and a script that slips in and out of reality indefinitely. There's this suitcase filled with important plans that might save the world from a fate worse than death, and a Rastifarian who initiates a trip to deepest, darkest Zion to deliver the plans to their rightful owner. The conclusion to this twisted tale appears in this issue." -- Call no.: PN6728.H43v.9no.3
