The Ape

The Ape / Milo Manara ; story, Silverio Pisu ; preface by Renata Pisu ; translated from the Italian by Jeff Lisle. -- New York: Catalan Communications, 1986. -- 86 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- Based on the Chinese story, "The Adventure of the Monkey God" (Hsi yu chi), by Wu Ch'eng-en. -- Call no.: PN6767.M36A6 1986

Summary: A boulder is mysteriously impregnated, and hatches into a full-grown ape. A light shines from him, interrupting the orgy of the Emperor of Jade. Peering down from the heavens, the Emperor's men see the ape wrestling a tiger decorated like an American flag. From below a crowd of flower children see the same thing, and soon they have founded a kingdom with the ape as their king. After a hundred years the ape is ready for something else, and decides to search for immortality. A man tells him he can learn about immortality from a buddha, an immortal, or a wise one, so the ape sets out on a quest. He finds a monastery, where they name him "Conscious of Emptiness," and make him toil in silence for three years. He learns to care for his vital forces: mind, soul and breath. Also he learns magic formulas, including 72 personal transformations. When he returns to his kingdom things have gone badly. Evil has invaded. The ape leaves to get a weapon from the Dragon of the Eastern Sea, toward whom he behaves abrasively. He takes a shining gold rod three miles long, and shortens it to the size of a walking stick. Returning again to his kingdom, he falls asleep and is hauled away to the Kingdom of Death. Protesting that he is now immortal, he crosses his own name out of the book of death. The head of the Kingdom of Death (called Yama) and the Dragon of the Eastern Sea protest together to the Emperor of Jade. Indira, a handmaiden of the Emperor, suggests promotion as punishment, and the ape is soon Inspector of the Imperial Stables. He finds he is only one of many such Inspectors, and that the stables are empty, so he returns to Earth and his Kingdom once again. The Emperor sends a celestial army to kill him, but the ape defeats the army. The Emperor calls him back to heaven, and this time he brings his mortal girlfriend, Conscience. Conscience is soon lost, and the ape is put in charge of the Emperor's peach orchard. One peach is enough to make a person immortal, so they are forbidden to anyone but the gods. The ape eats all the peaches, then drinks the Emperor's magic elixer, and becomes uncontrollably irreverent. The Emperor sends for the police, and the hand-to-hand combat between the ape and the chief of police goes on all day, nearly destroying the palace. Finally Lao-Tse captures the ape with a magic lasso of diamonds. Several attempts at executing the ape are failures, because of all the peaches, and finally the Buddha of the Western Paradise is called in. The buddha challenges the ape to jump over his hand. When he fails the buddha buries the ape alive under a mountain of other failed revolutionaries.

Adventures, no. 114 (Nov. 1950). -- Introduction of The Ape
Mastermind. -- Summary: In central Africa (also called
"darkest Africa" here) a big game hunter comes upon
"natives" being driven from their villages by apes with
firebrands. Captain Marvel checks it out, and indeed the
apes are occupying human villages and using human weapons.
Captain Marvel assumes a human trainer is behind this
behavior. The apes can't talk. Monkeys and chimpanzees are
also acting this way. Captain Marvel next finds a band of
white men with firebrands chasing black people, and the men
tell him how to find their boss, whom they've never seen.
The "ape mastermind" catches and gags Billy Batson, and
explains himself. He was born extra intelligent, and knows
both human speech and ape language. He plans to conquer
Africa, then the world, because "humans have ruled Earth
too long!" The ape is about to throw Billy into a fire,
when the human henchmen arrive, curious to see what their
boss is like. One of them says, "We aren't low enough to
turn traitor to the human race by helping apes! It was all
a mistake!" The ape is put in a cage to be studied by

"The Apes Who Could Make Fire" (Captain Marvel) / Otto Binder,
script ; Pete Costanza, art? 9 p. in Captain Marvel
It was all
a mistake!" The ape is put in a cage to be studied by
scientists for the rest of his "natural life." -- Data from
