Wizzywig : Portrait of a Serial Hacker / by Ed Piskor. --
Marietta, GA : Top Shelf Productions, 2012. -- 286 p. :
ill. ; 24 cm. -- "They say 'What You See Is What You Get,'
but Kevin 'Boingthump' Phenicle could always see more than
most people. In the world of phone phreaks, hackers, and
scammers, he's a legend. His exploits are hotly debated:
could he really get free long-distance calls by whistling
into a pay phone? Did his video-game piracy scheme
accidentally trigger the first computer virus? And did he
really dodge the FBI by using their own wiretapping
software against them? Is he even a real person? And if
he's ever caught, what would happen to a geek like him in
federal prison? Inspired by the incredible stories of
real-life hackers, Wizzywig is the thrilling tale of a
master manipulator, his journey from precocious child
scammer to federally wanted fugitive, and beyond. In a
world transformed by social networks, data leaks, and
digital uprisings, Ed Piskor's debut graphic novel reminds
us how much power can rest in the hands of an audacious kid
with a keyboard." -- Alternative genre. -- Call no.:

"La Piste du Grand Nord" p. 3-26 -- Summary:
Deputy U.S. Marshal Jerry Spring arrives at a prison camp with
his partner Pancho. Spring has come to interview a Chinese
prisoner named Tchang regarding an investigation, about which
the reader never learns anything. Marshal Spring meets another
prisoner named Robert Hawkins, who has an interesting story of
how he was framed for murder, and Spring decides to look into
it. Two men were involved in Hawkins' troubles. One was a
half-breed with an odd voice, and the other a big red-haired
man with a scar on his left wrist. Spring and Pancho visit
Hawkins' wife and son, and somehow this convinces Spring of
Hawkins' innocence. Their farm is on the "North Fork River," at
the foot of "Big Horn Mountain." A local Indian named Little
Wolf ("Petit-Loup"), who refers to himself in the third person,
has been keeping an eye on Mrs. Hawkins and the boy Georges,
because he also believes Robert to be innocent. The next day
Jerry and Pancho visit Little Wolf's village and learn that one
of the men Robert Hawkins described was probably a drunk named
Joseph Le Fou. Spring then gets approval from his boss to
re-open the Hawkins case and to go to Canada looking for the
two men. While Spring is in the boss's office, Pancho
accidentally finds Joseph in a bar. A gunfight ends in Joseph's
death by a bullet from someone who flees. Assuming that the
shooter is the red-haired man they're looking for, Jerry and
Pancho give chase. After 15 days they arrive at an outpost of
the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who have not seen their man.
The RCMP officer, Sergeant Sheridan, gives them a dogsled and a
map of logical hiding places, and they set out. After about 10
days they find and rescue an Indian who is surrounded by hungry
wolves. This man's name is Red Wolf ("Loup-Rouge"), his dogs
have been stolen, and he mostly refers to himself in the first
person. Leaving Pancho behind in an igloo, Red Wolf and Jerry
Spring set out on skiis to find the redhead. After two days
they find him. In the night Red Wolf steals his dogs back, and
the next morning Spring pretends to rescue the man, gives him
whisky, and asks him to make coffee. When he removes his glove
to make the coffee, Jerry spots the scar on his wrist (his
right wrist, but that doesn't seem to matter), and arrests him.
In two weeks, Hawkins is back with his family.
"L'Or du Vieux Lender" p. 27-46. --
Summary: Jerry Spring and his friend Pancho
are heading for California, where Pancho wants to become a
farmer. They witness a murder, though they didn't get a good
look at the perpetrator. They take the body to the sheriff in
the town of San Felipe and give a report. The man's name was
Svenson, and he had been the partner of another man named
Lender in a gold mine that doesn't seem to be paying off.
Lender is an old man with a reputation for being a little
crazy. The mine also has an employee named Williams. Jerry
Spring interrupts the trip to California to pay a call on
Lender, and gets shot at for his trouble, but eventually gets
to talk to Lender and present his U.S. Marshal badge. Lender
says somebody is trying to kill all three of them to get the
mine. The next morning Lender rides into town to settle the
legal affairs of Svenson, but he doesn't want company. After
Lender is gone, Pancho convinces Jerry that he's not safe
alone, and Jerry follows. He hears gunshots and finds Lender
with a wounded hand. While he's in town, Jerry notices that the
sheriff fits the description of the man Lender saw shoot at
him, which is consistent with what Silver and Pancho saw the
day before when Svenson was killed. Spring purposely doesn't
tell the sheriff that he is a U.S. Marshal. The sheriff keeps
encouraging Lender to leave the mine for his own good. Back at
the mine, Lender and Williams get into an argument because
Williams wants to leave, and Lender knocks Williams down with a
punch. That night, given guard duty, Williams sneaks out, and
in the morning he is found dead. The sheriff again recommends
that Lender should give up the mine and leave. That night Jerry
and Pancho find the rowell of a Mexican spur near the place
from which Svenson and Williams were killed. It's the kind of
spur that the sheriff always wears. Confronted with this, the
sheriff goes for his gun, but Jerry shows his badge and arrests
him. That night Pancho and Jerry save the sheriff from
lynching, and the next morning they ride back out to the mine.
Spring rides in alone, telling Lender that Pancho has been
killed. Lender is astounded. Jerry then shows Lender the spur,
and Lender identifies it immediately as belonging to the
sheriff. Lender has been using a disguise and framing the
sheriff. The two men fight, and Lender almost kills Jerry
Spring with a rock, but Pancho arrives in time to save his
friend. Marshal Spring had started to think Lender was up to no
good when he seemed too strong to be as old as he claimed. He
had white hair and was toothless, but his hands looked young.
Pancho and Jerry resume their trip to California.

"Le Héros Déshonoré" (Cap'tain Swing) p. 3-66 in Cap'tain

siege, and food and ammunition are almost gone. Captain
Swing sneaks in through a passageway only he knows, to try
to encourage the defenders. Only two more days and
reenforcements will arrive. Colonel Hopkins is in despair,
though. If the British actually push their advantage the
fort won't last two hours. Hopkins wonders how Swing got
past the British lines and Swing explains, but somebody
overhears. That night a silver platter is thrown out the
window of Fort Brix with the details of the secret passage
scratched on it. The British sneak in. Only Captain Swing,
the Colonel's daughter Vivian, and her fiancé Bertie
Wilkins survive. Swing is badly wounded. He tells a general
investigating the case that he only told Colonel Hopkins
about the passage, and although the Colonel is dead he is
disgraced as a traitor. Capt. Swing takes several weeks to
recover from his wounds. Then, at an inn, Swing
accidentally finds the silver platter because of a
confusion of luggage with another guest. The confusion is
soon corrected and Swing doesn't know the significance of
the platter, but Vivian and Bertie chance to come in as he
is holding it. Bertie recognizes it, and since he signed
the message with his initials decides that Swing must
already know about his treachery. Bertie's efforts to
recover the platter are to no avail, of course, because the
other customer has it and has gone on his way. Swing is
knocked out by a mysterious man searching his room (it was
Bertie) and is invited to Vivian's place to recover. Vivian
seems to have a slave named Sam, or at least a very
obsequious Black servant and cook. Bertie hires a man to
kill Swing, and has Mister Bluff (Swing's sidekick) taken
hostage. The ransom note demands the silver plate, but
Swing doesn't know what that's about. Swing is being held
at gunpoint by the kidnappers when Pouik (Bluff's dog)
brings him a pistol and joins the fray. Hibou (another
sidekick) turns up as well, and Bluff is soon freed. The
man with the platter knows its significance, and returns to
ask Vivian for 200 guineas to prove her father's innocence.
Bertie Wilkins gets to the man first, stabs him, and takes
the platter. The man lives long enough to explain it to
Vivian and Swing. Swing finds Wilkins trying to bury the
platter, and the game is up. The Hopkins name is cleared,
and Vivian is single again. -- Call no.: PN6748.C336no.113

Pistols.
Sex Pistols : the Graphic Novel / written by Jim McCarthy ;
illustrated by Steve Parkhouse. -- London : Omnibus Press,
2012. -- 1 v. : col. ill. ; 22 cm. -- Summary (from
SkyRiver): Explosive graphic novel about the rise and fall
of The Sex Pistols. Thanks to Steve Parkhouse's wonderfully
vivid illustrations and Jim McCarthy's clever distillation
of the script that rewrote rock 'n' roll and much else
besides, the Pistols' story returns to the rough and tumble
of the comic strip from which it derived so much of its
initial inspiration. England's original punks explode from
the pages with the same disrespect for authority that had
the British establishment up in arms during the Queen's
25th anniversary jubilee. And no one would have enjoyed
this take on the Pistols more than the tale's real
casualty, Sid Vicious, who devoured comics almost as much
as he did the destructive stuff. -- Call no.: ML421.S47M43

Summary: Bouncer is taking his nephew Seth
through a bad storm to see Crazy Butterfly, the man who taught
Bouncer the art of killing, so that Seth can also learn from
him. Seth wants to avenge his parents. Meanwhile, we see a
stagecoach being attacked. O'Rourke, riding shotgun, is killed,
and then the driver and a passenger who returns fire. The coach
is stopped and all the passengers but one are killed in cold
blood by the masked leader of the bandits. For some reason he
spares the pretty new schoolteacher who is going to teach in
Barro City. Crazy Butterfly is a Scotsman who lives in a high
valley, protected from storms and taboo to the Indians. There
are cave paintings at the entrance. The weather is always good
and we are reminded of Shangri-la. Bouncer tells Seth how he
first stumbled upon the "lost valley." Bouncer had been running
from bullies who had stolen his mother's saloon and humiliated
him as a defenseless one-armed boy. Crazy Butterfly was
formerly the gunfighter Silver Kane. One day a youngster named
Wonder Kid had challenged Kane, and after the Wonder Kid died
his mother threw a rock at Silver Kane. Kane felt her pain, and
it changed his life. At that point Silver Kane became Crazy
Butterfly the recluse with bagpipes. Bouncer and Seth find
Crazy Butterfly in his cabin pinned under the body of a large
dead bear. Crazy Butterfly tells Seth to carry out his last
wish, and then dies. Bouncer makes Seth do it as the beginning
of his training. The wish is to have his body cut up and fed to
his dogs. Bouncer then takes the mantle of master, proposing to
train Seth to be an assassin. Back at Barro City, the
schoolteacher gets a first look at her school. It is a
shambles, and there's a large iron cage in which the children
of prostitutes are supposed to sit, for the protection of the
more well-born students. She demands the removal of the cage as
a condition for taking the job, and thus angers the elite of
the town. Bouncer sits Seth before a caged lynx, makes him move
close enough so that the angry cat can almost reach his face,
and makes him sit there until he is no longer reflexively
afraid. Then Bouncer gives Seth a revolver and opens the cage.
The lynx comes out, but flees, and Seth has passed the test by
not killing it needlessly. Next Seth learns to shoot flying
pineapples and oranges while standing on his toes with his
heels over a cliff, and on a guided peyote trip learns to
accept the possiblility of death when faced with danger. Seth
and Bouncer return to Barro City in the Spring. They find the
Van Bohlen brothers in the process of trashing The Inferno,
which is the Bouncer's saloon. The Van Bohlens are two gigantic
men, but the Bouncer and Seth defeat them in a fist fight and
there is general reconciliation with drinks all around. Seth,
it is agreed, has become a man. However, since Ralton, his
parents' killer, isn't due back in town for a month, Bouncer
makes him enroll in school. Seth resists, but then gets a crush
on the schoolteacher. On Seth's first day at school three
ruffians, hired by the mayor to teach the teacher a lesson,
storm into the school. The men chase the students out, except
Seth, and prepare to assault Deborah, the teacher. Seth
challenges the three men and kills them, but is himself wounded
by a gunshot. While he is unconscious for two weeks, Deborah
has left town and Ralton, the killer of Seth's parents has
arrived and has taken over Seth's father's ranch. Hearing this,
Seth jumps immediately from his bed, rides to the ranch, and,
barely able to stand, barges into the ranchhouse to find
Deborah. Deborah takes him out back to where an open-sided
building has been erected to cover a stone altar. He meets her
father, who appears to be the leader of an idealistic religious
venture. The father is Ralton. Seth leaves in despair. Bouncer
suggests a solution, a way to have his vengeance and not be
blamed by Deborah for the death of her father. Seth invites
Deborah to go to Yellow City with him by stagecoach to see a
performance of Macbeth. Bouncer arranges to have Ralton hear
that a shipment of gold is on the stage. The masked highwaymen
attack, and most are killed since the Bouncer is both driving
and riding shotgun. Their leader remains, and it is Ralton.
Seth reminds him of Blake, his father, and shoots Ralton in a
gun duel. Ralton then takes Deborah hostage and flees on
horseback. He leaves Deborah by the trail, and Seth stays with
her when he and Bouncer find her. Bouncer continues in pursuit
of Ralton. Ralton goes to a coffin in a cliff dwelling and
finds a diamond, the Eye of Cain, inside the body of his
mother. Ralton dies there, as Bouncer catches up with him and
says goodbye: they were brothers. Bouncer puts the Eye of Cain
in Seth's altar and returns to his position of bouncer in the
Inferno Saloon.
