ruled with an iron fist. In this landscape of turmoil and
unrest tours the Naya Savera Band, dreaming of 'change' and
stoking the fire of rebellion with music. But as reality
intrudes and hostilities underlying the common dream rear
up, idealist and poet VP, scholarly Master and
ever-pragmatic Parvez drift away from each other, until
their paths cross again in Delhi, in the middle of the
biggest civil crisis to ever grip the nation. Once again,
the trio find themselves reluctantly uniting against their
common enemy, the State. Will they escape the ever-watchful
eyes of the government? Will their dreams of an
egalitarian, socialist democracy come to nothing? Will the
Naya Savera Band raise its voice in song again? Find out in

Napoleonic War and fell under the thumb of French
domination. Gaining independence after decades of civil
disobedience and anarchist bombings, the Socialist Republic
of Britain is now a small, unimportant backwater connected
by a railway bridge, steam-powered dirigible, and mutual
suspicion to France. When a British diplomat's murder is
made to look like suicide, ferocious Detective-Inspector
LeBrock of Scotland Yard stalks a ruthless murder squad
through the heart of a Belle Epoque Paris, the center of
the greatest empire in a world of steam-driven hansom cabs,

was 1933, four long years after Wall Street crashed and
took the rest of the world with it, and the Great
Depression was just getting started. And so was the Goblin.
A master at turning hopelessness into a commodity, the
corrupt mob boss led a colorful gang of circus sideshow
freaks-- including the cannibalistic Vulture-- in a corrupt
stranglehold on the city. Peter Parker came of age during
this time of struggle and hardship. Raised by his Uncle Ben
and Aunt May, two stemwinding Socialists committed to
positive change for the people, Peter would have been a
boyish beacon of optimism in any other era. But in this
world of noir, he was an embittered, angry young man in
search of justice. And then along came a spider. After a
fated meeting with a mystical arachnid and its
life-changing bite, he may have just inherited the force to
honor the phrase, 'If those in power can't be trusted, it's
the responsibility of the people to remove them'." --

Society is Nix : Gleeful Anarchy at the Dawn of the American
Comic Strip : 1895-1915 / edited by Peter Maresca. -- Palo
Alta, Calif. : Sunday Press Books, 2013. -- 151 p. : col.
ill. ; 54 cm. -- (Giants of the American Comic Strip) --
Summary (from SkyRiver): "Mit dose kids, society is nix!"
So said the Inspector about the Katzenjammer kids, but he
could have been speaking of all comic strips in their
formative years at the turn of the last century. From the
very first color Sunday supplement, comics were a driving
force in newspaper sales, even though their crude and often
offensive content placed them in a whirl of controversy.
Sunday comics presented a wild parody of the world and the
culture that surrounded them. Society didn't stand a
chance. These are the origins of the American comic strip,
born at a time when there were no set styles or formats,
when artistic anarchy helped spawn a new medium. Here are
the earliest offerings from known greats like R. F.
Outcault, George McManus, Winsor McCay, and George
Herriman, along with the creations of more than fifty other
superb cartoonists; over 150 Sunday comics dating from 1895
to 1915. -- Call no.: oversize PN6726.S5955 2013

comics. -- "'Korean comics: a society through small frames'
examines the changing social realities of Korean society
from the 1950s through the 1990s by reading its comic
books. Featuring the works of twenty one of the best-known
South and North Korean artists, the exhibition provides a
running commentary that reflects the lives of ordinary
people, at once joyful, satirical and penetrating. What
shines most prominently through these works is an engaged
and vigorous civil society in Korea, continuously
challenging and energizing the status quo in whimsical and
provocative ways. By so doing, they play an important role
in characterizing and distiguishing the culture,
sensibility and sentiment of two Koreas." -- Call no.:
