"For years, Scarface has been one of the most brutal
mobsters in the Gotham City underworld. But he is a
different sort of wiseguy, unique among the criminal
community. You see, Scarface is a ventriloquist's dummy,
the mannequin mouthpiece of mild-mannered Arnold Wesker. It

human life is merely a sympton of Wesker's fractured
psyche. But what if that outlet were removed from the

"The Gang Boss!" / John Romita. 7 p. in Justice, no. 42
(Jan. 1954). -- Summary (by Ben Chabala): Bull Bronski has
just delivered a speeding automobile filled with dynamite
to one Gentleman George, a rival gang leader on the East
Side. Now Bull's going to have to send flowers to George's
widow. But what does he care, he's the gang boss of the
East Side and he doesn't waste any time setting up his
rackets, or "convincing" people to play along. Then a
rookie cop gets put on the case and uses some psychology on
Bronski's muscle, and on the West Side gangs. The next
thing you know it's war in the middle of Lincoln Square.

Contents:
"Rockblitz" 10 p. -- Summary: A biker (in a studded jacket) named Rocky goes to beat up a hippie, but the hippie turns out to be a space alien who zaps the biker with some kind of peace ray. The biker gets his gang together and tells them they have to go to a rock concert tonight, even though it's on "peacecreep turf." The concert dome is raised up into space during the concert, and the aliens zap the whole crowd with pacific results. Now a whole generation is ready to "evolve and join up with the cosmic consciousness." This story also appears in Heavy Metal, no. 3 (June 1977), p. 35-44.

"Point Gamma 3" 8 p. -- Summary: Two space travelers come upon an intense energy source on an asteroid, which disrupts communication with their base. What it does is radiate ultimate consciousness and allows them to recover their cosmic essences. In other words, from the point of view of the base that is trying to keep track of them, they disappear.

"Orcyb" 14 p. -- Summary: Two astronauts, Astryd and Keldryc, have a hand-held which synthesizes radiation from the stars and planets, the flowers, their ship, etc., into sound waves. The mission of the astronauts is to find Yamma, a source of cosmic intelligence. Guided by their "psychic faculties," they go into solar orbit and are approached by a giant dark ship called Orcyb. Keldryc does a spacewalk to Orcyb, and is confronted with a construct called Yurkon, made up of Keldryc's dark impulses. They struggle, and Astryd beams the music of the spheres from the synthesizer to Keldryc. This enables him to concentrate his psychic force and win, and he is transported back to the ship. There he sees an insect on a leaf in the shape of Orcyb, and Astryd tells him to stop dreaming. This story also appears in Heavy Metal, no. 6 (Sept. 1977), p. 83-96.

"Nova" 8 p. -- Summary: A star goes nova, and Astryd and Keldryc try to run from it in their ship. A streak of light hits them, and it is a message from Yamma, saying that the nova is a gateway to Yamma and they must go through it.

"Yamma" 8 p. -- Summary: Approaching Yamma, Astryd and Keldryc find their bodies energized and their thoughts shared. They learn that they are the latest incarnations of a couple from Atlantis. The couple was taken to safety because of their good "neurological patterns," even though the rest of Atlantis was destroyed because it's scientific investigations created an imbalance. The happy ending is presented in these words, which must speak for themselves: "You have brought us the terrestrially synthesized code of human potential, which we require to construct the organism called the galactic switchboard. Now, the network of telepsychic intercommunication will be enabled to reintegrate the planet Earth with cosmic consciousness. One day, you may return to your people, when they have awakened to the knowledge of their essential being!"

(from SkyRiver): Frank Miller changes the game in the

Detective Hartigan. A highlight of the series, and the
inspiration for one of the segments of the blockbuster Sin
City film, That Yellow Bastard returns in a newly

of his first comics art in years! The worst thing to be in
Basin City is an honest cop, but it's Hartigan's last day
on the job, and he plans to go out with a bang. Little
Nancy Callahan, age eleven, has been kidnapped by a psycho
who likes to hear children scream, and Hartigan's going to
